Two more. Same as previous (captured in JPG/Fine Detail. Subsequently noise reduced and smart sharpened a bit in PS. Uncropped - just resized.)

A cropped section of a test shot. The strobe is a bit hot and not yet dialed in. But the facial expression was nice.

A few from our first visit to Chester Zoo last Saturday, handheld as usual 5DmkIII, 70-200 2.8 mkII with the Canon 1.4 mkIII extender.

1- shot through viewing glass between fingerprints, hence the slight distortion on the head 'spines'

IMAGE: https://photos.smugmug.com/Animals/Zoos/Chester-Zoo-25-03-17/i-W3Lg6Dt/2/XL/Chester%20Zoo%2025-03-17%20%200051-XL.jpg

2- 'taking a bath' very dark area, think the combo handled it all really well

IMAGE: https://photos.smugmug.com/Animals/Zoos/Chester-Zoo-25-03-17/i-kzz5Px8/2/XL/Chester%20Zoo%2025-03-17%20%200067-XL.jpg

3- that moment you realise you have to go back to work after a great 4 day weekend

IMAGE: https://photos.smugmug.com/Animals/Zoos/Chester-Zoo-25-03-17/i-cCzH75j/2/XL/Chester%20Zoo%2025-03-17%20%200110-XL.jpg

4- This lady was stunning, only a brief 'showing' but worth the wait

IMAGE: https://photos.smugmug.com/Animals/Zoos/Chester-Zoo-25-03-17/i-j2vBfqq/2/XL/Chester%20Zoo%2025-03-17%20%200164-XL.jpg

5- just amazed to get anything at all - dark / through thick grubby glass and water

IMAGE: https://photos.smugmug.com/Animals/Zoos/Chester-Zoo-25-03-17/i-4kDqmtK/2/XL/Chester%20Zoo%2025-03-17%20%200154-XL.jpg

Sorry for the photo overload, just trying to show what a varied day it was ;-)a

Thanks for looking

My son is 17 years old and will be gone to college next year. I've been trying to get him to pose but he refuses. I managed to catch him on a hike in a thoughtful pose. Absolutely love the way this lens renders the background. Soft late evening light, around 7:30pm. No noise reduction. Kid needs to shave though! :)

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

If you use a 1.4 or 2x extender, how do you like the image quality? I'm needing more reach for baseball games but deciding do I try an extender or rent a 100-400.

I probably do 90% of my motoracing work with the 1.4 mkiii attached and hand on heart - real world - hard pressed to see a drop in quality, sample gallery if you're bored

This lens, when attached to my 7D Mark II, is astonishingly quick in locking and holding focus. The cars at the top of the corkscrew kind of just pop out of nowhere and then plummet down the hill, there's no way to anticipate the instant they will appear, yet with this combo, my keeper rate was quite respectable, even at 1/80th of a second.
