I hope you had a good magnification there, because I would sure don't want a big spider on my ceiling :)

The photo is uncropped so he was only about 35mm from leg to leg, a small one for this area. They are generally considered harmless.

I didn't think so, I have never seen one do it. But after a quick Google it seems they can with their next molt
