The 70-300L though.. much more expensive, but by all accounts an excellent lens. If you can swing the cost, that's what I'd go with.

I've heard good things about this lens. I could never bring myself to spend $1,500 on an f/4 zoom, especially since the 70-200mm f/2.8 is about the same price. Also, the new MII non L version is under $500 and has great reviews. That's just me.

^^^ 55-250 nifty 250 don't disappoint. Wish I had the STM version.

A couple of pics of our old parish church. I love the blue sky, but then thought I might prefer it in BW. Can't quite decide which I like better.

I like the colour one but I was trying to describe the b/w shot and you nailed: Hitchcock. It projects that "something is going to happen" feeling.

Have to say I like both but for different reasons.

I think that perhaps you do not understand what it means when an AF point lights up. .

You seem to think that when the camera lights up AF points, it is telling you which ones have confirmed focus. That has never been my experience at all with Canon DSLRs. In my experience, the AF points that light up are the ones that are active. They light up because they are actively looking for contrast to focus on.

When an AF point is lit up, it means, "hey, i am looking for something in my zone to focus on". . It does NOT mean, "hey, I am now focused on something." . This has been true with my 1D2, my 40D, my 50D, my 5D, and my 1D4. I have no reason to think that the 80D would be any different.

That is not my understanding/experien​ce. The camera was set to use all the 45 available points, but only a subset light up. That subset are the ones the camera considered to have achieved focus.

Anyway, my problem appears to have gone away after some AFMA tuning, the lens was frontfocusing and the DOF didn't reach the background. After the adjustment it reaches the background so all AF points that are highlighted are in focus.

Was in Samburu over Easter, my 80D was married to my old dust pump. More to follow as I get them processed.

The suffix after the EF part is the clue on a Canon lens.
EF-M - mirrorless bodies of the EOS M series. These are crop sensor lenses, but are physically much smaller, and the lens mount is totally different.
EF-S - crop-sensor bodeis only (e.g. 750D, 80D). These can also be used on a mirrorless M series with the Canon mount adaptor.
EF (no suffix) - designed for full-frame bodeis (5DMk4, 6D). You can use an EF lens on a crop body (including a mirrorless M series with the mount adaptor).

Never mount an EF-S lens on a full-frame body. The back of the lens on an EF-S sticks out more, and whilst it will physically fit on a full-frame camera, if you click the shutter the mirror will hit the extra length of lens protrusion at the back and smash the mirror to bits!

You have to be a lot more carefull with 3rd party lens nomenclature. Sigma use DC (https://www.sigma-photo.co.jp/english/su​pport/faq/) to indicate crop-sensor lenses, although their FAQ on the subject reads like stereo instructions written in Swahili and translated to into Urdu and then into English. I can't tell you what the codes for other manufacturers mean alas.

BTW I can vouch for the EF-S 55-250 STM being superb.
