Moving to Sony

I've always used Canon but thinking about moving to Sony.

I am trying to find a camera that I can shoot videos & do some vlogging (4K & 120fps).
The only downside I am seeing is the lack of a flip-out screen. But, I can get a phone mount and use my phone as an 'external monitor'

Because I am looking for video capabilities, I am debating on the a6500 or the A7SII.
I am leaning more towards the A7SII due to the larger sensor and better low light noise??

I tried looking at comparisons but I'm not seeing much. Most are comparisons with the a6300, A7RII, or A7II. And not the A7SII.
Thoughts between the two?


*I also do photography a LOT. At the moment, all of my work is photography, but I am going to be doing 50-50% photo and video work.
I was thinking about the A7RII for photography, but maybe I can end up using just one camera for the job?

Or should I look at another brand? -- If there is one to compare.
Or should I wait to see if anything new comes out this summer?

Rent both for a week and it will help out a lot. In the meantime search for youtube vids that list the pros and cons of each.

Get the A7rii

Arguably the best 4k camera available, and hands down the best photography camera Sony offers.

Why do I consider it the best for video?

It does full frame 4k, but has pixel binning. In short, is not the best at ultra low light, but I find it plenty good for stage and church lights. It does full readout in crop mode. That means you get 4k in 1.0 and 1.5 crop factor, so if you have a 24-70 f2.8, it acts like 24-105 F2.8 in video mode.

It's the only camera that can do this. Also, the only FF camera with faster AF for 4k

Are you in to processing your video? Color grading and all that? If yes, Sony is a great choice, if not, I would consider a Fuji X-T2 or X-T20 because of their great film simulations in video.

Beyond that, what's your budget? The video features of the a6500 and a7xii line are very similar, to the point where I would almost say it's splitting hairs for most users.

Its what ive been noticing. But Ive been seeing comparisons between the a6300 rather than the a6500 mainly.
But, its the same thing pretty much.
However, the full frame of that A7SII seems to have better benefits for low light. And isnt this the only camera that can do in digital zoom?

From what I understand the a6500 is just a mildly improved a6300, I'll have to ask my friend who owns both.

I had an a7S (mk1) and it did great video, though I never got to try the 4K since I didn't have an external recorder (not necessary with the mk2 or a6500). I may be mistaken, but I think both the a7Sii and a7Rii can zoom digitally. I believe the a7Sii has cleaner video if shooting in full frame mode, the a7Rii benefits more from shooting in super-35 mode (which if I remember right is cropped similarly to APS-C).

The a7sii is definitely King of low light, but the A7rii is the second best low light camera available while retaining 42mp, comparable to the a7sii up to 12800.... Check out Dave Dougdales review on YouTube, he compared both a7sii and A7rii for video.

I thought about moving to Sony and even bought an A7R and played with it.

Considered A7Rii but to convert all lenses were daunting....85, 24-70, 70-200, 300 f2.8.

What I really wanted was 120fps.

So I bought a6300 with 18-105. It's great. And sigma Art lens works great!

Of course your needs are different than mine. But since there are no size benefits to Sony FF over Canon, and my 2nd entry to sony with a6300 suffices, I just added instead of converting.

Once I start to convert my lensea to Sigma Art... who knows.

Well, according to rumors, Sony may announce a new FF e-mount camera on the 23rd. It is probably A7sii, a 20mp camera optimized for action and low light. You may want to momentarily hold off to see what it turns out to be.

23rd of when?

I am not buying this soon. I am still debating on things, doing research on what i'd need and stuff like that.
Plus, since I can, I would be buying it used. But if a new one comes out and its what i am looking for, ill consider a new camera.

NAB is in a few days, so I would wait until then. The next announcement wouldn't be until June, so probably past your deadline.

Both of the two listed has their flaws. The a7s only uses Contrast Detect for AF, and recent controversy with the GH5 shows that CDAF is still subpar for video AF. The a6500 has rolling shutter issues.

Neither of them have dual card slots, fully articulating screens, touch screen, AF joystick, etc.

I already went to Sony. It was an obvious choice

did they fix the problem with the long exposure in the a7rii? I have really heard good things about the camera. Also how are the canon L and the sigma art lens EF mount on the Sony?
