Spent a couple days in Vegas, M5 was the perfect walk around camera. I saw lots of folks carrying Nikon and Canon crop DSLRs, so glad I had something much more compact!

Unless something has changed recently, none of the after market batteries to replace the lpe-17 s canon batteries are not decoded. Meaning they will work, but will only charge in their chargers and the M5 will not register how much battery charge remains. I also is annoying in asking if this is a canon battery, that it ,ight damage the camera if continued to be used. In my experience, it does this every time the camera wakes up!

Thanks for the reply GTogs . I'm sure they'll be fully decoded before too long as most other batteries have been. If original manufacturers didn't try and rip us off with crazy prices for "accessories" there'd be little or no 3rd-party market for copying their products, but it has always been thus with so many things, not just cameras.

I agree the price is high but if these aftermarket companies that sell counterfeit, OEM companies wouldn't be putting security measures into their batteries.

The E17 has been in the market for awhile since it's used for the T6i and others. If it was decoded, it would have been done already. I'm guessing Canon rally locked it down that the aftermarket companies can't figure it out.

i don't have any issues with my batteries ever... because i never really leave my cameras on.... i'm getting about 600 pics and a bunch of videos on 1 battery..... i shoot turn the camera off. but i carry a spare just in case.

A question for those using the ef adaptor: Does your EF lens on the M5 react as well as when its on your full size EOS camera? I was told EF's could be adapted to a sony body but its not nearly as smooth as expected. So I'm a little suspicious of adaptor promises...

I would say it works as accurate or better due to the fact there's no mirror related AF issues.

I have Metabones for EF to Sony-e, the EOS M adapter works better. Period.
In fact I've used more than one generation Metabones adapting my EF mount lenses
to a Sony A7Rii, even with the latest it does not feel native. With the adapted EF or EF-S
lenses all feels good with the M5.

I haven't had any issues with using adapter. Focus is good and quick ... occasionally in low light focus is difficult, but that can be an issue in any camera., and this camera tells you, and you can adapt accordingly.

I haven't had any problem with any EF or EFs mount lenses I have tried with the adapter.

You also have to remember that the elf adapter is made by Canon, so the compatibility will work a lot better when used on their own products.

Taking a lens and 3rd party adapter and adapting it to another brand will not be perfect.

i own the adapter..... no problems at all... but i did notice one thing though... the STM lenses are a bit slower to focus (by tiny amounts of time) that the one STM lenses... my 85mm f/1.8 is super fast, even in video with the adapter.

Ive been using my Canon EOS m5 as my backup camera for professional shoots... even at low ISO there is still some noise... just a bit, but my clients love it..... here are few shots fmor todays Black Milk shoot.
