Found out today that I have a very large discount through work on Sony DSLRs...

Right now I shoot with a Canon 80D, and have a Tamron 24-70 and F/4 70-200. Thinking about selling it to switch over to the Sony setup.

Most of my shooting is automotive and stills (autos), and having the 4K video option would be nice, even though i dont shoot video (yet).

Looking at the 6300/6500, or possibly the A7/A7 II....

Any particular recommendations on either, and as to why? I dont feel i NEED a full frame, and it would shoot slower, but....why would I want it, if i went with the A7?

Any decent lenses out there for not a TON of cash, as I am seeing that Sony lenses are priced considerably higher than the comparable Canon.

Thanks all!

If you're thinking of diving into video, I'd highly recommend going with a body with IBIS (so the 6500 if crop). If 4K is important though, the only body from your list above that does that, and has IBIS, is the 6500. The A7ii has IBIS, but no 4K - it's 1080p.

All that aside, if you've never shot full frame, there's just something about it.

Plenty of great lenses. The "not a ton of cash" part is tricky, because like you said, they tend to be pricier than Canon counterparts. But they're shaaaarp. Great place to start would be to keep it simple and just get a Metabones, and use the glass you've already got. You wouldn't be able to take advantage of native features like Eye-AF, but if you mostly shoot cars, that might not matter much to you anyway

I think you need to make your own decision. If you don't feel a need for switching full frame, there is no need to switch to full frame: both full frame bodies and lenses are more expensive.

If you don't do video, why are you so concerned about 4k. In any case, if you insist on having 4k, make sure the model you choose, has 4k video capability.

If you are not sure, you can first buy a Sony camera body and a Canon EF to Sony E-mount adapter and use your current EF lenses on the Sony body. See if you like the new camera body. Then you start getting native Sony E-mount lenses. If you don't mind about manual focus, you don't have to buy an expensive Metabones adapter. Just buy one with electronic camera-lens contacts which can be found inexpensively (around ~$50). Sony cameras have means that greatly help with manual focusing: focus peaking and focus magnifier.

I came to sony a6500 from a 60D

I miss the long battery life. I also had a xsi. Took it to a 6 day vacation with battery less then full and there was still juice when I cane back.

The a6xxx series will easily drain the battery in half a day if you use it a lot. I am still not used to that.

The menu is not bad at all, its actually very similar to canon. Touchscreen on the a6500 feels like its not even there. I rarely use it.

IBIS is nice and you can easily do hand held videos, especially at wide angle.

The dynamic range is insane. You can take a completely underexposed raw file and turn it into usable and clean picture without loosing any quality.

If you get the a6xxx, get a fast SD card. You'll need one to be able to shoot 100Mb\sec video, also with a slower one, the camera takes a few second sometimes to write to the card.

The rolling shutter at 4k is insane. Dont expect any dramatic movements in 4k video unless there is good distance between the subject and the sensor. With that being said, 4k is insanely clean and still very usable. Below is a snapshot from a 4k clip straight from the camera(you can do frame capture in camera)

I have the sony 18-105G lens(probably best lens for the price considering the constant f4 and the zoom range). Not their sharpest lens but it has its sweet spots. It also has major distortion which the camera fixes in JPEG files but this below is a raw edit(the lambo shot). For video this lens is all youll need but fr photos, I wish I had something else.

Let me know if you have any more questions, I am still sort of new to this camera.
