I have been thinking a lot about wifi and cameras recently, so I thought I would see if I could find a way / test out, the Canon w-e1 wifi SD card in the 5DSR - and see if, after using it, there could be any reason I might ever use it.

First of all, I will report, it does work - I upgraded the new firmware and the w-e1 works - it isn't exactly stupidly easy to setup but it does work. The one, semi bug I found, using my Android phone, was that when you connect to you 5DSR's wifi network, since there is no internet connection, the phone shows it is connected - but the 5DSR, with wifi chip, does not - and that is because I had to further answer the phone's question, which was buried not on the top active screen, if I really wanted to connect to a network that wasn't connect to the internet - once I answered yes - everything worked.

It isn't elegant but it works - you can operate your camera from your phone, but you can't use the camera manually if the phone / ipad is connected (you can save the connections for 3 different devices to make life easier - iPad / phone / etc) - you have to disconnect the phone from the camera to release the camera.

For you tripod users out there, who may want to leave the camera and walk away - I can definitely see this being useful.

I tried to pretend I was taking the camera to an event, fire off some pictures, turn on wifi, connect phone to camera, search for a picture I wanted, download it to the phone, launch LR Mobile, crop and do a super fast edit, and see it it was remotely doable - lets say, not if you are the paid photog at a wedding - but maybe at a family event, sporting event, it is possible with some practise.

Here is a self portrait, after about 1 hour of practice, that I very quickly took using the phone as the remote, downloaded the picture to my phone, edited it in LR Mobile, and then posted it to Flickr - did this in 5 minutes (but takes practice).

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Hey Charlie, I really enjoy viewing your work. I've never understood though why you say “Not for everyone...”

Have some confidence my friend. Your work is wonderful and should be shared with everyone. :-)
