I had a sudden disappearance of something over 30GB of free space on my main SSD system drive. Seemingly just after the "big" update that MS insisted on running, even though it shut the computer down, without allowing me to save what I was doing, and without asking. I'm running Win 10 Home x64. Using a program called TreeSize I see that I have some 40 odd GB tied up in C:\Users\(my account)\AppData\Local\Temp. How much of this can I delete safely? All of it, or do I need to be careful in what I get rid of? In the past it was usually fine to delete any temp folders/files that were older than the current days date at a minimum. I do have a drive I could copy them to, for a just in case to make sure the computer carries on running OK.

Alan, I can't speak for your temp files, but I routinely wipe mine using CCleaner.

Always make sure all your important documents are present and backed up.

I regularly delete the files in "C:\Users\(my account)\AppData\Local\Temp". The files that are open or in use will not get deleted (License files). The browser temp internet files/cookies can safely be deleted. Some antivirus programs will have a menu item to perform this exact function.

Hope this helps,

Thanks guys. I downloaded CCleaner, since I see it recommended a lot. It actually freed me up nearly 60 GB of disk space, so that was all good. I could have had more, but I chose to keep my Chrome and IE cookies and history files, since I rely on them for remembering logins etc, as well as getting back to certain pages I wouldn't normally bookmark. I have to use IE to view my Sky TV content, since it will only run under Silverlight. It seems odd that they require the use of IE as your only browser, it's not exactly up to date now is it.

Anything in that temp folder should be safe to delete but the big drop in free space is likely consumed by your previous version of Windows 10. Microsoft gives you 30 days to roll back the installation.
