Anyone familiar buying gear on eBay from a Japan seller? I'm looking at a lens and including shipping the amount would be around $200. Any idea how much the import duties would be? Anything else I should look out for?

Seller is shipping via Japan Post EMS

Thank you.

Not Japan but I've bought two lenses off e-bay from Hong Kong. In both cases I simply paid the amount due from the e-bay auction and the lenses showed up at my house a week later.

Depending on which lens, there can be 2.3% duty or free. Chances are however you won't have to pay anything. I've bought quite a few items from China and Hong Kong via ebay but never had to declare customs clearance. I am a licensed customs broker at a logistics company, so I would've had to clear my own shipments if necessary..

Depends on what shipping service and how the shipper declares the package...

I've bought two lenses from Japan, both around $600, and never paid extra fees--just $30 each time for EMS, which is a tax all in itself IMO.

I've purchased two film cameras from Japan (both - Tokyo) in exc+++ condition, for very fair prices in the past month. Both were duty free.

Not sure I can generalize - but that's what I've experienced.

I have bought a number of lenses and cameras directly from Japan via eBay. Never had to pay any duty. Shipping to the US is expensive, so factor that into the price, but that's it.
