Magnificent light, Duane! Have the eagles at the botanical gardens given up trying to nest there yet?

Long story short. The USDA-WS drove the eagles out of the gardens. They moved to a tree on private property close to the gardens. The male mated with one of his offspring from the 2009 season and they had one eaglet fledge the nest....his mate was found dead at Little Creek Anfib Base after that nesting season was over. He was seen with a few other females but never paired up with them. A younger pair of eagles drove the male out of his new territory and they are using the nest he built and are raising 3 of their own eaglets at the moment. I haven't been to the gardens since 2012-2013.

Wow. Thanks for the update. Do they know what happened to his mate? He sure has had a rough time with the ladies. Poor guy.

They feel she was hit by a car. This is just word of mouth...once they moved out of the gardens I stopped following the Norfolk pair. I'm now following a pair 15 minutes from my home and not many people know about them and the ones that do don't stop by very much. I'm enjoying the peace and quiet truthfully...a lot has changed since the early days at NBG.

I would have been happier if this frame in the landing series was in focus but I'm not complaining because it's rare for me to capture a Bald Eagle in flight with a decent, non-sky background.
