Backyard red bellied woodpecker female bringing food to the nest (hole at right). They were pretty active this morning. It is tough to photograph them this year as some Australian pine branches have grown to obstruct the view, so I have to play the game on a windy day and wait fot the branches to blow to the side, a very tricky business!!! I may try to trim them after they finish using the nest hole.

I watched this Yellow-crowned Night Heron from my SUV for about 30 minutes, hunting along a roadside ditch in George Bush Park. During that time, he stalked, caught and consumed 3 crawfish. Same procedure each time: slow, slow stalk, lightning fast strike, crush the shell with his bill, toss in the air at least twice and then swallow. He was close, less than 20 meters, these are cropped just a bit, for composition. Center point focus, AI Servo, high speed continuous, spot meter, handheld out my SUV window.

Just Caught

Not sure of the purpose of this behavior but he did with every catch, almost as if he was showing off.

Did he rotate the prey when tossing them? Just a guess. Maybe he was positioning them for swallowing. The first shot shows a crawfish that needs a quarter turn so as not to go down sideways.

My first woodpecker! :-) I know it's a female, but is it a Hairy or Downy? I'm leaning more towards Hairy, but I'm not sure.
