little over your budget, but I personally use this as my travel/on-the-go tripod:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00GKE3W8C (external link)

I mean its not as nice or sturdy as some expensive ones, but well enough for me.
I have used it with my 6D with 70~200mm f4 without much issue.

Also, if you want to use it as a mono-pod, one leg comes off that you can attach to your body.

Good luck!

I haven't noticed "Snobbishness" regarding tripods but I have seen a lot of people Gobsmacked (Wenglish for very surprised) when the try a good tripod. Also, whilst I have found many uses for very light compact tripods, I haven't found a use for "Wimpy" ones.

Good tripods come in all shapes and sizes but they are rarely cheap, though they need not be silly money. All my support (bar one mono pod) is Gitzo and the most expensive was £375 (Gitzo GT4542LS bought new 3 months ago) and the cheapest was £100 for a used 3 series Carbon Systematic + accessory carbon center column.

Nothing to get snobbish about there!;-)a

Life is for living, cameras are to capture it (one day I will learn how!).

Used and aluminum.

My personal minimum would be a Manfrotto/Bogen 3021 (I've got three of them), but their value is fairly well known, so they're hard to find under $100 even used (and then you need to buy a head).

It does look like you can get a used Tiltall for less than $100 on eBay, and you won't need to buy a head (although there are some disadvantages to the pan-tilt mechanism for a rectangular format camera). Make sure you get a genuine Leitz model, however.

My needs, for just general use. I'm a hobbyist so don't need a super expensive tripod, but it would be nice it was able to hold my 6d and my 70-200 f2.8 combo. Most likely will be used to car shots(to do multiple exposures and polarizations) and perhaps some landscape/cityscape work.

1. Try your local camera shop and shop for a quality used tripod, I found mine that way and it has lasted me for the past 6 years.

or

2. Just purchase the sunpak budget tripod and call it day.

Unfortunately, some of us don't have that option.

I don't know about the OP's area, but around here, all of the little independent places where you could get anything like a good deal on used gear are long gone. That pretty much leaves the SINGLE local chain from whom you're not going to get a "deal" on ANYTHING.

If you have the resources, they're great, but you're as likely to find a good used equipment deal in a store in some places as you are to find a coconut in Antarctica.

Don't ignore pawn shops. They usually don't really know what they have when it comes to tripods. I bought a clean Manfrotto 3021 with a Manfrotto 3265 Grip Action head for $25 at a pawn shop. Probably could have bargained lower, except I was giddy.

But I sold the head for $50 on eBay.

Nothing wrong with the original Marchioni. You're more likely to get brass bushings that way too.

But yes, some sketchy versions followed the Leitz model. I've seen some with plastic leg locks (!).

If you're speaking in reference to tripods, I recently bought a new one, a Vanguard Alta Pro, so thanks anyway.

I hope to be buying a couple of lenses to replace an old 18-55mm Canon kit lens and a 70-300mm ProMaster (rebadged Tamron), but I'll probably being buying used from B&H or Adorama.

Again, thanks.

I was just bemoaning the death of the camera store in the Cleveland, OH area.

When I got my first digital camera around 2008, there were multiple chain stores and several independents here.

Now there's ONE chain (Dodd) and they're closing stores. The only other reasonable alternative of which I'm aware is Pixel Connection in Avon. They're friendly and have decent prices, but they're pretty small.

Those of you with a good used market should count yourselves lucky.

Don't ignore pawn shops.

Pawn shops tend to be a regional thing.

When I was stationed at Ft. Knox in the '80s, there were a lot of them between Ft. Knox and Louisville. I never bought anything from them. I did notice that pretty much every gun they sold was owned by Elvis or Hitler...

They're not really "a thing" in the Cleveland area. I suspect that eBay and Craig's List are probably putting a big dent in them everywhere.

Interesting that you identified "Ft Knox."

Indeed, the army post might be a factor. I went to high school in a small town adjacent an army post, and there were strings of pawn shops on every road leading from a post gate. I was rather surprised that there were more pawn shops within the first block of any gate in that town there are in the whole of many major cities.
