This is an informative warning & advice for all who browse internet, open emails and use social media services.

Please disconnect the network, back up all your files (photos, videos, documents) to external drives, then disconnect all devices where the backups exist, then reconnect to the network.

Why? Because all your work is valuable.

A large scale ransomware attack is going on, see

Must admit I normally dismiss these sort of posts as alarmist, but seeing whats happening here in the UK , I think this is one to take note of and take all possible measures to protect your data.

Of course this is a Windows only issue and non updated version at that.

Some good info about some possible ways to remove that ransomware if you are one of the infected:

We got a guy at work get hit with something like this 2 years ago and because we had him mapped to our drive on the server it wiped out all of our data. Fortunately/unfortunately we had a backup but it was a week old so we lost data from the previous week.

I use backblaze and I wonder how they handle this situation... what if an attack occured they wouldn't upload the broken file would they?

Hard drives are so cheap now I just makes too much sense to have multiple copies of everything.

Good luck my, MS buddies.

Let's not make this a flamewar about OSs, please. Whatever the system, backups are essential.

My apologies, Pekka. I'll delete my OT post. Of course you are correct.

I think the folks who perpetrate this kind of stuff should be treated with a sufficient amount of succinylcholine to insure they don't try this again.

This attack could not have affected Mac OS?

One easy way to stop these would be making Bitcoin and all its derivatives illegal globally. Anonymous payment target is what makes ransomware possible.
