Nice shot.

There is a marshy area close to my house that I drive past every day going to and from work that seems to always have a lot of redwing blackbirds either sitting on the tall grass/cattails or flying about from one spot to the next. I always think to myself, that could be a good place to go shoot, but never have taken the time to do it.

7Dmk2, Tokina 12-24 f/4, Canon EF-S 18-135 f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, Canon 70-200 f/4L IS, lots of little stuff, flashes, stands, and almost enough brains to be considered dangerous

Charlie, that is a dandy image with a difficult background, especially for zone. I would love to know your focus settings. I really struggle with center point, even with assists, for BIF. Thanks.

Mikeivan,

Thanks for the kind comments. I use center point zone AF with the 8 surrounding points selected. Just replaced my version I EF 100-400 with the version II. Have not had time to do any micro adjustments. Worked well on both 100-400 mm zooms. I think the 4 stop IS really helps.

I think Michael Tapes video would help. It was filmed here in St Augustine and also features Tim Grey from Ps/ Lr.
Just saying..

Another great shot Charlie.
I think you should teach a class on wildlife flash photography. You do use a Beamer, correct? You never end up with the steely eyes or blown out whites, love your stuff!

Thanks JV. I've been around some brilliant pro photographers here in St Augustine. They teach courses at the St Augustine Birding and Photofest every year. I've been to 14 yearly events.

http://www.floridasbirdingandphotofest.com (external link)

Learned how to tweak using the Better Beamer over the years. On B.I.F., I use ETTL set to 0 and with portraits set it to manual power anywhere from 1/1 to 1/32 depending on the distance. I also set the focal length at 105mm on my Canon 580 EX II. With the newer flash, I would set it to 200mm.

The Better Beamer instruction say set it to 50mm. Less than 5% of the time I also get ghosting of the eyes. I try to shoot off angle a slight bit say 3%. Do this to get some shadow to make the photo a little 3 dimensional.

Did not learn everything on my own. One of my mentors is Chas Glatzer from Shoot The Light.

Hope this helps..

7D2 + the Sigma 35mm 1.4 Art is a winning combo!

Thank you for the info!
Do you have your flash on a bracket to get it above the lens?
I have attempted this with my eagle photography in the winter here and haven't had much luck.

Tricolor heron and cattle egret from yesterday at the Alligator Farm. Just had about 50-100 cattle egrets suddenly appear.

Coreopsis

I was setting up to take a photo of this large field of Coreopsis, for a friend who loves wildflowers, when I noticed some Cattle Egrets flying in.

I managed to capture one in flight.

And an image of these two, strolling through the wildflowers like a pair of lovers. Spring is in the air.

These are handheld, center focus point, spot meter. The birds and wildflowers were distant, these are considerable crops.
