Man, its been a long time since I last posted! :) Was out in the yard dinking around with some packaging foam, playing with different diffuser styles and caught this guy strutting up and down the fence. What caught my eye was his folded up wings - reminded me of a peacock or turkey when they're displaying for a female. Not a species I immediately recognize (nor can find on google) in any case. He was a small little guy considering these photos are at 1:1 on an APS-C sensor (7D) and have been cropped just a fuzz bit as well. Kinda wish I would have had the extension tubes on.

Nice images.

Can't tell you what kind of fly that is.

I'm jealous that you've got insects in Northern Wyoming and I haven't see squat in Ohio so far this year!

Might have found an ID, from what I've found with Google it looks a lot (and behaved) like a type of picture-winged fly called a peacock fly. I've never even heard of these flies before, certainly interesting little bugs.

Thanks!

Here in the past couple of weeks everything has really started to wake up now that its finally stopped snowing (places around here had over a foot of fresh snow just a couple weeks ago). All the apples, chokecherries, and lilacs are just starting to bloom. :D I can't help but to stop and give a look over to see what is buzzing around when I see something in full bloom!

Good shots- great looking fly- certainly a picture wing fly, Tephritidae. Think ion the USA you often call these fruit flies.
