Mine did that once when Inwas in CA last month, but it was rolling in the viewfinder, bottom to top, i was pretty sure it was the led light that was backlighting some leaves on a tree. No issues since.

I think it's silent shutter banding due to orientation.

This is exactly what it was doing. It's worked sense and it works perfectly fine before. And at the same exact time I was having the issue I went outside and it works. How would it be a defective shutter if it still works and I was only having issues at that time? I'm curious to what test I can do to see if I can make this happen again or what the issue is. The lighting was really weird inside

Nick, I hope you get your issues worked out OK.

Not the best by far but I'm having fun playing with lights and learning to 'sculpt' photos of bottles & glasses.

Did you have silent shutter activated when you had issues or just EFCS?

Thanks very much. I'm pretty convinced that I need a third flash for this type of shooting. As it is now, I have to have the side lighting too far forward so it wraps around to light the front of the bottle too. The side lights need to be further back to produce that crisp edge light I'm looking for.

There are times I wish I could have stayed in the Navy as well. As a fellow Navy veteran, you are still in a very exclusive club that you'll be a member of for a lifetime.

I think I've come up with an idea for my second body that makes a lot more sense for me than the a9...

a6500 + MC-11 + Sigma 24-35 F2. On the a6500, this would be the equivalent FOV, DOF, and noise to a FF 35-50mm f2.8 ,which sounds limiting, but would be a useful focal range for documentary photography, particularly when my main cam will be the a7rII, which I can use to cover the 70-200 range if I need reach. I can also flip roles and use the 24-35 on the a7rII if I find that I'm primarily shooting wide, and use the a6500 + 85GM (135 f2 equivalent) as a back-up to shoot long.

Realistically the a6500 does a lot of what the a9 does (12 fps, high density tracking AF, big buffer, zero blackout EVF), at 1/3 of the price....the big difference of course is the crop factor, which is where glass like the 24-35 F2 bridges the gap. The times I do need high burst rates and really good tracking is basically outdoors in good light, so the sensor size disparity isn't much of an issue given the intended uses.

Any thoughts from the a6500 guys? The big clincher of course is how well that 24-35 F2 works via the MC-11. In my limited use inside a poorly lit camera store, it seemed to be adequate, but I'll need to rent one to try it out.

Thanks very much Eddie. I darkened the 'reflection' a little and added a small amount of blur too.

Note the bottle is still sealed. :p I don't party that hard...anymore! ;-)a

In the Navy aboard ship, we (us dental types) had access to some medical alcohol. It was 190 proof or 95% alcohol. Now that would curl your hair!!

Crop factor aside (of which there are inherent limitations which we're fully aware), the a6500 is an extremely sophisticated and capable camera. In terms of AF it outperforms my previous 5d3 which up til now was the best AF I've worked with. In the right hands paired with fine glass the a6500 can be an incredible image making machine. I say rent one for a couple weeks to get the feel of the body and see for yourself.
