blackout free is nice, and a9 af seems much much better as well.

the Eye AF improvement is good. my concern is that probably the A7 series won't get the same body as the A9(joystick, dual card slots and bigger battery).

still deciding on the a9 ....

what would you do vinz?

Ah yeah it has the continuous live-view viewfinder, but not blackout free.

My random thoughts on buying an A9 as a hobbyist .... If photography was my only hobby I suppose I could see dumping a crap load of money into the A9 and some fine glass. I certainly have that kind of $ wrapped up in my hobbies, i.e. 4K in a mountain bike, 2K in ski gear, 2K in kayak gear, and the little a6500 . So, as long as people are responsible about it I think it reasonable to buy what they want. On the other hand, If your family is going to live on ramen noodles for the next few years to offset the cost of your personal wants then it might be best to re-think things. As long as I can give my family what they need/want (to a degree) I feel pretty good about spending my extra $ on myself.

well. you have a lot to sell and you mentioned you love to shoot birds and races. if i have a lot to sell like you, i would buy the A9.

In the "continuous live-view mode it shows still images, so is not a live continuous view.

Everything I see about the 16-35 GM is shouting my name...just can't get over all the awesomeness that Sony has engineered into the lens. Wish we didn't have to wait till August.

Then if you're ok with some of the "limitations", the a6500 seems like a great supplement to your existing fantastic a7rII setup. I also have 4 gigs lined up for September, most engagement sessions and a couple of family shoots/newborn shoots, and since I'm rocking the a6500 now, the a9 is a bigger upgrade for my gear. A useable silent shutter will prove valuable for those quiet moments.

There's no denying the significant difference in price however, especially since I'm potentially looking at a 24-70GM, 55 1.8, and FE 85 1.8 which is a huge chunk of change (though the lenses I might be able to pickup used for less). But I'll probably have to suck it up and pay new prices if I want to get registered for a Pro Support (not sure if you need to provide receipts or just serial like Canon CPS).

I know you love a Disney and with your family being 5 (I think?) it's a costly excursion. I'm already looking at taking my two girls to Disney in a few years when my youngest is 4 or 5, and it's already looking like a $4-5k trip.

The limitations of the a6500 are basically the limitations of the a7rII (+ being APS-C of course), and the a7rII has been more the adequate for the paid work that I do, including a number of weddings. There's a difference between gear lust and legitimate need that, and I'm just trying to keep a level head, not letting myself get caught up in the hype, and really considering what the value proposition is for me, given what I shoot. Very different story if I shot sports, but the primary features of the a9 will be underutilized by me.

Yes Disney with meal plan, flight, and on resort accommodations is easily $4,000+. That's A9 money right there, but perhaps this time I'll prioritize experiences over stuff.

I just got my acceptance to Sony Pro Support. They haven't asked for receipts, but they do ask that you fill out a spreadsheet with your gear, serial numbers, and purchase date.

Provided you can afford it, I see no issue in dumping $4,500 on a hobby camera. YOLO! The RX1RII is the most ridiculous play camera ever...but I love it

This is probably the finance-guy in me speaking, but I personally find the a9 harder to justify as a camera for paid work unless you shoot sports.....when you're shooting for money and treating it like a business, you really have to quantify the need for the a9 because you have margins to consider.

AF is pretty crap in comparison to newer bodies isn't it? Or does that only really apply to adapted rather than third party??

Yeah, I don't see it being any different than the Batis 85 on the a7: true e-mount lens from third party.

I've been looking at images OF the A7 & FE35/1.4 & it is just too bulky for what I want I think.....
