I had to meet him at Photo Plus last October in NY while he was doing a speech for Fuji, and the feeling I get is that he's a really down to earth guy who sometimes get elevated on a pedestal sometimes and I don't think he's entirely comfortable with it. But I spoke to him for about 10 minutes before his presentation and he gave some great tips.

That's good to hear. I do enjoy his videos and think he is talented.

On another topic, Thomas Heaton has a new video where he tested three focus methods for getting sharp images.

1. Using hyperfocal distance
2. Focus to infinity
3. Hyperfocal distance using preview button

#1 resulted in a soft image. #2 resulted in a sharp background and foreground. #3 was sharp but not quite like focusing at infinity.

Unrelated but the new DJI spark looks very interesting and attractive. At the price point and knowing DJI it's sure to be a winner and will move in large quantities. I've never flown a drone before but it does look like an interesting thing. I could never rationalize $1,500 or so for a drone but at $499 it's more reasonable and wouldn't kill me if it were to break.

that looks great but....

and up to 16 minutes of flight time will appeal to a variety of users

up to 16... so what is it in reality 10? 12? 15?

normal size drones are already 25-30 minutes and this is half.

I think todays drones are pretty easy to fly. They often have automated modes and crash prevention systems.

At 499$ i guess i would need to look at it too, since im more and more interested in aerial photography.

As a P4P owner (and previous owner of MP), this new Spark is somewhat interesting. But I think that's about it. I'm most likely going to skip this one because of short range, no 4K video, and only 12MP stills. As bulky as my P4P is when compared to this tiny bird, it is still the best bang for buck at the moment. Here is one of many reviews of Spark https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b133h35NaO4 (external link) and towards the end you can hear that Spark is probably intended to attract new flyers (which makes very a good sense with its size and price point).

Same to you Travis...and the tripod looks great! Definitely a better height fit for you than me. :)

After we met I made a crazy spur-of-the-moment decision to drive over to the Little River Canyon, near Fort Payne, AL. Glad I did; the information center said that today's waterflow is the greatest since they've been recording it...and it's like 40% beyond the record. Snapping some SR captures as I'm typing this.
