Taken back in 2006 when I got my first DSLR. Rebel XT and 75-300mm. Ugh I hated that lens. This was taken at 300mm.

Were rules ever set down for how cheap is "cheap"? How would the various STMs get considered? Are they too new and good despite relatively low prices?

It's a good point, there are vintage lenses in this thread that often carry a cost as much as a brand new kit lens with autofocus.

Cheap is relative, after all. A $500 lens is cheap to some. A $50 lens is cheap to all likely. In the context of what this gear costs, $250 is even pretty cheap for a good lens.

There are many good lenses that are cheap, around $100 or less, that don't have to be adapted vintage. While the STM lenses are great and new, they're also EF-S. Mean while, there are really good EF mounts from the past that are still very good (28-105's, 28-70 II's, etc), the STM primes (24, 40, 50 STM), the plastic fantastic, etc.

I don't think rules can really be laid down. Over time, some lenses get cheap, others become expensive.

Very best,

My opinion (and I am not the thread starter) is anything under $500 New Retail is pretty cheap but anything under $300 is really cheap.
