The best response would have been "Apparently, the kind that attracts obnoxious people with perverted minds."

I just said I'm only a student trying to get home work done, sorry if I offended your sensibilities.

The kind of pervert that even my own mother would warn you about.

I have been taking shots at my daughter's travel softball games this year and last weekend I brought my recently acquired 70-200/4 to the fields to put it through its paces.
One of the parents sees me and asks, "big enough lens for ya?"
I actually was thinking to myself, "well, actually it's not" but I just smiled.

Previously I'd used my 55-250 and never got any comments which is ironic in that it has a longer max focal length and wider reach.

We recently had our barn added to the Marshall County (Indiana) historical listing of 'old' barns (ours was built in 1883). The guy who showed up to photograph it was using a XT/18-55/built-in flash. When he showed up, I was in the back yard shooting the barn kitties with 1D4/100-400. "What'd THAT setup set you back? $20,000? I know that professional stuff is EXPENSIVE. You a photographer?" "Nope. I'm a nurse." He couldn't speak for a few seconds. I'm not sure if it was the 'nope' (not a photographer), or the nurse part. A few people still trip over the nurse-guy-thing.

I don't know about second, but I was shooting a bird (macaw?) at a zoo after the staff took it down. She asked me not to get too close because the bird wasn't used to such a big lens.. It was just my otus 85.

I get the who do you work/shoot for a lot, and then when I say nobody I do this for fun its a hobby, a few times Ive gotten "man I wish I had your day job" and a couple of times dirty looks and attitude like I showed up at the event just to mock a perfect stranger.
Ive gotten pretty good at spotting theses people and try to avoid them.

My favorite was when I was at my daughters track meet and saw her and her friends laughing, I found out later that one of her friends who didn't know me said to them "there this really weird guy following us around taking pictures" my daughter turned to look and told her "that's my dad"I laughed about it, her friend felt bad.
