Good day indeed. The wife basically gave me the go ahead to get the a9 now if I wanted as well as signing off on a trip to Disney World with the girls this December. From all I read (and I had no idea that there was so much research and websites setup for Disney World!) they seem to say that the first week of December is a pretty good time to visit. It's my wife first time to Florida and my first time to WDW since '88, lol. Obviously going for the girls though, since my wife doesn't go on any rides and I'm not going to make the 3 of them wait for me, I'll be content with watching my girls have a good time and going on a few kiddie rides if my oldest wants to go. By then my littlest one will be 29 months so hopefully it won't be the hell that I imagine it can be.

Just thought of it now, between these two expenses it'll be over $10k, lol. Just like how it's so hard to stay in shape but easy to be a fat lard eating burgers and fries all day, why does all the fun things in life have to be so expensive, cry.

Congrats! on a9 and Disney.

First week of December is a great time to go. Christmas stuff is up, but the parks are not too busy since kids are still in school. I'll either be there that week or the first of January.

Thanks. I would, and will when I get my new flash. :-) Adding a light in PS isn't too big a deal or I could also take the time to take multiple shots with the flashes I have then blend in PS since everything is locked down. The easiest way is to just use a separate flash for the backlight to begin with as you suggested of course. My new flash is "out for delivery" and will be my 3rd flash. I'll be able to have each flash in its own group so I can control them independently from the camera using the Nissin Air 1 Controller.

Yes firing a gelled light into a black background can change things up:

A couple of views of Auckland CBD from the car park at Westpark Marina. I missed the best colour in the sky by a couple of minutes.

I tried framing the view with the palm fronds.

Until I get the other items I want to shoot glass with, here's a pullback of the simple setup I used for the Bacardi shot. A black cloth is hung from a picture frame for the background and I used a black acrylic sheet as the 'stage' sitting on a wooden kitchen cart. Softbox on one side and bare flash firing through a round diffuser opposite. You can see a bit of the gold foil paper cutout behind and above the bottle from this angle. I also had a piece of gold paper behind the glass. I used tea and acrylic ice cubes in the glass.

This pullback shot shows more detail with a dark background. Try viewing it by clicking on the pair of glasses at the right of this post.

Hi Gene, not sure if youve read the book before but a great reference would be Light Science and Magic - it is probably the best book on lighting that i have read....

Thanks for the tip, I'll check that out.

Here's a shot where I did use the 3rd flash fired onto the background. I set it low aiming upwards with a 7" reflector and diffuser in front of it. The background itself is made up of two leaves from my dining room table and I cloned out the joint line in post.
