It's one of the kangaroo paws, probably Anigozanthos rufus. It's native to the southern coast of Western Australia, about as far from Cornwall as you can get!

Still waiting for the wisdom they promised would be worth getting old for.

Thanks. Now you mention it did seem to have a label "kangaroo paws", I wasn't sure if that was that plant or the supplier or what. Probably concentrating on beer, food and companions too much.
