have you heard about L16? they are calling it a DLSR replacement, will be going for sale this year.

Yeah I saw that. Really disruptive tech if that thing works anywhere remotely as well as they say it does.

every sigma DSLR lens I tried does that... not sure why, I need to try my sigmas on metabones see its also limited.

not sure if its hardware limitation or they do it on purpose to limit AF to same size as DLSR limited AF center zone.

I just tested the MC-11 vs the Metabones on the A7Rii with the Sigma 24-105 - and using the Large Focus Point, in the outer regions of AF pts, the MC-11 just hunts whereas the Metabones, using PD only, locks on immediately.

As I have said many times, I prefer the MC-11 with Canon lenses and the Metabones with Sigma lenses - crazy, but that is how it seems to work for me.

And in all honesty, for Professional work, I just don't believe in adapters - but for everything else they are fine - in fact, the Canon 24-70 F2.8 II on my A7Rii with a Sigma MC-11 is my goto 1 camera for everything because it is near perfect.

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

I may get flamed for my comments and please don't take this the wrong way but I'd never spend $4,998 for a camera to make shots like the ones posted above. As I understand it the A9 is geared toward sports shooters. That said, I'd expect that the AF on the a6500 is sufficient for 99% of all enthusiasts of action photography.

same here, its weird that sigma lenses work better with metabones, Sigma DLSR lenses simply don't like being forced to work with hybrid AF system, you loose all the fancy Eye-AF etc... but auto focus is just so much more reliable with metabones.

:p and that is exactly why i'm returning it... but before I do, I thought I would try it out, the longest lens I have is the Sigma 150-600C, its big, its slow, and it generally doesn't like dramatic quick change of directions, but overall it worked fine.

don't get me wrong, I really like the a9, but like you said, I simply will not utilize it to full potential, and $4500 is a lot of money.

I really like everything they did with a9 body, I want all those improvements in the next a7 series.

above pictures where just some quick images in local forest preserve, Its not like I'm going to go cover the olympics or go shooting in Africa for National Geographics.

And a big sound of advice, if your a a7ii or a7rii user, don't USE A9, it will spoil you, once you shoot with a9, its REALLY REALLY hard to go back to a7rii
The viewfinder, the buttons, the relocated buttons, the AF joystick, the AF, the write speed, the buffer, THE BATTERY! everything about this camera will spoil you.
Its really not about the FPS, its about everything else they changed, it will spoil you.

If you don't plan on buying a9, stay away from it, its will not be healthy for your a7rii "relationship"

If you mean to say that the a6500 could basically take the same shots then I'd agree. The a6500 AF is stupidly good and I can't imagine the a9 being significantly better....and for sports/wildlife shots at base ISO I don't think you'd see much difference in IQ either.

In terms of performance the only area I see that the a9 would clearly be better is at high ISO. Basically indoors sports where you're using a fast shutter speed in dim light. I happen to think that the a6500 does a fine job at high ISO though.

I think the A9 is for two types of folks… 1) professional sports/action photographers Who will certainly utilize its benefits and earn enough money to cover the cost, 2) enthusiasts of sports/action photography with money to spare. All other action enthusiasts could likely find another camera body for much less money that would be sufficient for their needs, i.e. Sony, Canon, Nikon, etc.

They can also do things like use two cameras to take shot of the in focus and another out focus and combine them to simulate fast aperture glass (i.e. iPhone portrait mode...which HTC actually did first). Really with multiple lens cameras we might be able to use mobile devices to simulate just about everything that we are aesthetically creating with our big single lens camera systems now. Not anytime soon, but imagine where this could go in 10-15 years.

Exactly! I love my iphone 7 plus for that!
Added reach with the longer second lens is very nice to have too

Also waiting to film more as i really like the video quality in good light

That a9 battery is a must, and so is the joystick.

I have a bag full of batteries for my a7R II, but I think I've worn them out because they run down super fast now. AFAIK, it's not good to completely drain lithium batteries before recharging them, yet the short battery life always has me running out of juice, so I'm accidentally abusing them and shortening their life.

It's been a solid two years since the announcement of the a7R II and three since the a7 II...wonder if we'll see an a7 III this year.

if you want to use Sigma glass and want best AF, I would say forget about MC-11 and go for metabones and pure PDAF, you will get much much faster AF and as other person said AF though entire AF area of the camera, you will miss out on Eye-AF, but AF simply is a lot more reliable with metabones.

For sigma lenses metabones works better
for Canon lenses MC-11 works better

It seems like something out of bizzaro world, I know its weird, but that the case.

will be renting the a9 again for Road America, and maybe Eagle shooting in Iowa in winter.
