I jumped on the Nik suite when Google made it free, but honestly I forget about it. I think I used it once or twice.

What is it about the first one you prefer? The first one comes off a little too cool for my taste, so I'd prefer the warmth of the second or perhaps something in between. I'm also preferring the shadow detail in the second.

I've only used Nik a handful of times.

Something about the colors just work for me for that particular image... can't really explain why. Thank you for your opinion though, I'm leaning toward the second one too.

I really like the Nik suite, I just wish it had 4K support...

I really like the way it works. I don't use it often, but it creates a look that's hard for me to emulate using LR, especially when using SilverFX.

Took a trip down to old Ellicott City on Sunday. They had a major flood last July and this was the first time we'd been back since. I'm really surprised how well they've cleaned up the city in just under a year, downtown was completely shut down for weeks.

I was playing around with some of the Nik software again... couldn't decide which version of this shot I liked better... thoughts? I'm leaning towards the first one.

Both are great, the first one stands out more to me, I like the cool feeling

Sounds like something GE would do. So they don't need to pay taxes.

Yes, I paid for it after it came out first time, only really use the SilverEfx as I don't like Lr B&W conversions much. Hopefully it will continue to work over the next few years.

Don't you love when you forget that you ordered something and it arrives to brighten your day, only a new lens hood for my 16/1.4 but still made me smile.

Umm...no. I believe you are being unfair.

I think the company which made NIK was floundering. The software probably would have gone down with the company years ago. It would no longer be available, it would almost certainly never have been free and it would probably already be incompatible.

Google bought it, updated it somewhat, kept it compatible with corrent systems, made it much cheaper and gave free upgrades to anyone who had purchased any part to the whole suite, and after that, they spent a few years giving it away and doing updates for free. They even gave refunds to people who had paid for it in a generous window after they made it free.

Now they continue to make it available for free and have publicly stated that they won't be putting resources into keeping it up to date going forward.

They spent time and money keeping up the business and now they are accused of destroying it. They spent resources making software available for free and now it is a crime because they stop.

Yes indeed. I call that the "Magic Mailbox" when I forget I ordered something, and am pleasantly surprised when I find a package waiting for me.

I was never a fan of the B&W presets from LR they always needed more manipulation to get the look I wanted.
I do love the acros film setting for anything I want B&W. Shooting in raw then knowing I can change it later is a great feeling.

Appreciate the reply; I like some perspective.

I work for a huge company and am a fan of business. But our charity work is charity work, and our business work is business work, and only sometimes they overlap (fantastic).

But in no way, shape or form can I believe that Google is a public charity for photographers. "Free" = eroded market value, not a business model for a product that commands value.

The difference with how LR handles Fuji files compared to those of other companies is at least a small part of what pushed me into the Fuji system fully. If you apply any of the Acros simulations or the Classic Chrome simulation (if your camera doesn't have Acros) and convert to B&W you can get some pretty solid results from LR. The vast majority of my work is edited in LR and I'm pretty pleased with the results.

Here's a couple of weird things found in an antique shop for an example, both shot with the X-Pro2 + XF 35/1.4 and processed in LR CC
