I really like this first one charlie, nice perspective especially the way the road is falling away behind them and you are at the low angle. I would have boosted the contrast on the couple personally though but I have a habit of adding too much contrast at times so take what you will from that

I agree with Eddie. Really like the first one but could use more contrast. Yea dull lighting really sucks..

My brother couldnt get a photo in time for his engagement party and asked me to take a few photos. Too bad it was super gloomy, and a flash just wouldnt work well on my location shoot

June gloom is seriously killing me around here, cant shoot much, everything turns out dull -?

I actually like the flat looking background. Looks very minimalistic. The lines and the couple are what make the image anyway.

But yeah when I have really flat light like that I use darken lighten center in google Nik to darken the background and lighten the subject slightly...creates more separation between the subject and background so things don't look so flat. Even a subtle touch of it can go a long way:

Portrait shoot lined up for this Friday... probably not any full body shots as the shoot will be in my apt and space doesn't really allow for full body shots unless you do some non standard crops..
going to take my time with this one..
I want to shoot better portraits .. but have been frustrated with my results.. just seems like so many things to think about ..
things that I don't see in the moment , as i'm so worried about the technical aspect of things .. ( exposure , proper lighting etc)
being a bit introverted/shy doesn't help..
how do I tell the girl above , (who is not a pro but what just doing a favor for a friend whos trying to start a clothing line) to fix her hair ? lol
pretty girl and all but holy crap this was the best pic of her hair..
but the worst part is I didn't see it till I got home

I've spent a little time reconfiguring my a7sii and a6500 so that buttons are a little more similarly placed
Fridays shoot is on home turf , and so it should provide good results.. should ...

just ordered an adapter so I can use a bowens mount beauty dish with my 360.. i have a white reflector for underneath..
spent some time today researching poses on flickr and Instagram ...will continue and develop atleast 10 different set poses i want ..
not sure which sony i'll be using.. i'm sure ill mix in the both .. with fe28, 55 mostly ..
below is the young lady i'll be shooting .. she is an aspiring model , so i more aware of herself , which helps me of course

Well, I gotta disagree with that...you always apply exactly the right amount of contrast imo. :)

Thanks David, I'm continually second guessing myself it seems. That's reassuring to hear

- on the 1st picture, I would crop half of the foreground blurred road - I think it looks much better when I do it myself

- on the second picture, I would remove from the right female figure the piece at the very bottom that looks like a tiny male sex organ or I might be tempted to crop it tighter to eliminate some of the background and bring more focus to the two couples

Hockey and wedding photographer. Favourite camera / lens combos: a 1DX II with a Tamron 45 1.8 VC, an A7Rii with a Canon 24-70F2.8L II, and a 5DSR with a Tamron 85 1.8 VC. Every lens I own I strongly recommend [Canon (35Lii, 100L Macro, 24-70F2.8ii, 70-200F2.8ii, 100-400Lii), Tamron (45 1.8, 85 1.8), Sigma 24-105]. If there are better lenses out there let me know because I haven't found them.

Hehe I was thinking about you the other day because I did the same thing you did and screwed up the camera settings in that cosplay shoot....if you look at the EXIF on the bumblebee photos I posted y'day you'll see unnecessarily high ISO and shutter speeds (like ISO 800 1/400s). I eventually caught the mistake but yeah I have a couple of high ISO shots that should have been at ISO 100.

It really is a lot to think about....and dragging lights on location adds another wrinkle to the complexity of things. It helps to bring an assistant to be a second set of eyes to help with posing and hair and what not while you juggle the technical stuff....particularly if you bring a female assistant as that sort of stuff does not come intuitively to most men.

If you add a levels adjustment layer above the first image, you'll see that there is a big gap on the left where the black point is set at. Move that slider to the right until it's even with the historgram where it begins. That will add contrast. I would also bring in the white point to create a more high key look since you're half way there anyway thanks to the overcast sky.

Here's a quick example of what I mean.

question for the tech friends here.

Do full frame sensor gather more light than a crop sensor because it's bigger given the same exact settings? or Do bigger sensor gather more light than a smaller sensor?

Go!
