Nice job on these! They never let me get that close long enough to raise the lens!
markesc,
Thanks for the compliment!
You got me to thinking about how close it was and I measured it as 25 feet from the critter, and yes, that was about the limit for this particular chipmunk's risk taking, and I did have to move slowly.
I know that there are charts and tables out there to compute how large a certain image will be at a set distance and focal length on a certain sensor, but if it helps people that are contemplating this lens,
tiny subjects at 25' and 400mm on a FF sensor will clearly not fill the frame. If it helps, the full-sized image is below.
The neighborhood critters drink from a thermostatically-controlled heated birdbath that has a glass lean-to over it, protecting it from snow and bird droppings.
The shed in the background is worn and the birdbath's frame rusty, but the critters get fresh water daily in a spotless plastic liner.
Lots of animals live in this shed as well, and they give me something to photograph on occasion.
CyberCat: Yes, those are incredibly cute animals and as such, they get away with a lot around my home!
