Fireworks are tough. I don't think k I've ever nailed a fireworks shot in all my attempts. But yes even when you don't get it right from a technical standpoint, interesting things can happen.

Me neither Carlo. I made it even more challenging by shooting long exposure on a moving boat. Haha. It was still fun to try. Next time, I will stick to solid land and find a good composition. The good thing about shooting fireworks is you can stack the images in Photoshop to create a composite.

Btw, you should go shoot around Galveston, especially Pleasure Pier. That's the pier you see in my image above in the distance. I bet you can get some great shots at blue hour.

Just checked it, is sitting at the UPS depot. I'll drive over and sign when I wake up this afternoon. First lens I'm going to
play with is the FE70-200/4, then the 70-300G, then via LA-EA3 the 70-400G2.

As far as action cameras go the a9's sensor performance seems to be top notch and the most well rounded of it's peers. It seems there really is a trade-off between speed and IQ....i.e. the a99II shares the same sensor as the a7rII but has a similar drop in DR.

I think a lot of people are framing this as the a9 beinga step backwards as a camera, but I don't see it that way at all. These cams are just more specialized tools these days and for me, I'm just trying to understand how and when to use what camera as each definitely bring something useful to table for me.

I agree people saying the a9 is a step back have to realize that we're comparing it against a what I believe will go down as a legendary sensor. Compared on it's on, it holds it own. When compared to the best, it might not be as good. But that's like saying if you're not getting a steak at Peter Luger's, everything else is garbage or if you're not driving a Lamborghini the rest don't live up.

And as they say, "It doesn't matter how good the dynamic range is if you miss the shot because the camera missed focus or capture just the right moment".

Hah I was out there today actually for fathers day....east beach so pleasure pier was far away. Not the most photogenic water in the world, so I didn't bother to bring anything wide. I shot a bunch of random stuff of the kids, but the color of the water bugs the crap out of me every time. I shot this last year but never posted it:

Absolutely Gene. I'm very happy with the AF system and speed of this camera....particularly since eye focus can track people that are in motion. I find myself shooting differently with the a9 because it can do things that I would shy away from with the a7rII.

Simple candid of my daughter doing a group dance with some adults that turned out nicely. Eye focus hit its mark even when the DOF was really shallow. Also, I really like the way skin tones came out on this shot. There are many saying that the portrait rendering of the a9 is very pleasing...similar to the a7s. I think it might be the AA filter.

That Ferris wheel and rollercoaster in the distance is begging for a nighttime shot (assuming it lights up at night).

I shot this in Santa Monica last year. Need to go back and redo the shot as I was never happy with the final outcome.

It lights up. I've been meaning to shoot it at night. Maybe one day when I have a beach shoot I'll hang around for an extra hour.

I know I've been ranting and raving about getting the 24-70GM, even had Vin PM with a killer price (if anyone is looking for one, check his out). Guess my wife must've seen me watching YouTube video reviews and reading up on it obsessively, so just woke up this morning to my wife telling me it's on the way this week as a Father's Day gift. Lucky me I guess!

Went out to the beach yesterday. Sunset wasn't all that interesting and the place was packed due to the heat we've been having.

Challenged myself to stay away from the wide angles (my typical pier shots) so I brought the FD 135/2.

FD 135/2 for both shots.

I had my knee surgery around then so probably not able anyway. Plus there is so much to shoot its hard to stop and say hello! LOL.

Frank Ruggles called me Friday said he was doing a book signing at the Grand Canyon and had an extra day so heading up there tonight after work its about 3.5 hours from Phoenix

Still maybe catch you and the birds in New Mexico trying to pencil that in at some point
