Most of the big jets are sold pre painted & I suspect that if they weren't it could be very expensive & very difficult for the potential buyers to find local people who could come even close quality wise for much less cost than what an air frame sells for. Getting most scale jets painted could cost as much or more to paint than a full sized car especially if there are a lot of graphics like Red Arrows schemes etc.

I guess that there are less and less real aeromodelers around these days, and more who simply fly pre-built stuff. ARTF was only just starting to become a thing when I got out of the game, that was back in the late 80's. It used to be that most everybody at the club not only built their own airframes, usually from a kit, but finished them too. The one thing that did eventually disappoint me with finishing them was when they introduced the iron on, heat shrinkable cloth covering. Because I loved the small of Dope when my Dad was covering a scale/semi-scale model in a traditional finish.

Alan you are correct about the majority of today's ARF (Almost Ready to Fly) pilots but the fact is there are people who simply want to fly R/C & who have little to no interest in building or even repairing. It's also cheaper to buy an ARF than try to build something similar. There are still lots of builders out there & I'm in that group. Back when I switched from free flight to R/C I also built my radio & servos using Heathkit stuff, AND I do not like the plastic shrink covering either. I'm a silk & dope guy.

A skill is developed through constant practice with a passion to improve, not bought.

I never got the RC bug, but my father (he's 75) has been flying (and building) since he was a kid. He also did the Heathkit as well. Miss the smell of silk & dope too...lol!

According to the air show announcer, this P-38 is valued at 14 million dollars.

I did the radio control, darkroom timer, 2 stereo receivers, & was sorry to see them go out of business.

I'd like to think more than that since there are what... less than 10 air worthy ones left?
