MISSISSIPPI KITES

These kites are being observed more frequently in Texas this summer. My wife and I see from one to four, soaring over our neighborhood, most mornings. This morning, I sat out on the deck with my 7dii, and waited my chance. It came just after 8, in the early morning light and "cool" (81 degrees, high humidity). I could see him looking right and left, searching for prey (dragon flies and cicadas). He was medium altitude, 40 meters or so. These are hand held, 65 point zone, and about 50% crops.

So graceful and effortless in the air, they are a delight to watch and to photograph.

The chicks are flying now, so it wont be long before the Osprey depart for the year. This mom has done her job.

Just tell me where to go for those outstanding Mississippi Kites. Poof and I are willing to travel.
Wonder where the greatest concentration/greatest chances are of seeing them ???

MM, around Houston, the best place is along Hwy 90, between Liberty and Dayton, near the Trinity River. Mississippi (and Swallow-tail) Kites abound.

They are also plentiful along the Mississippi River, in Baton Rouge, near the LSU campus.

Also in Oklahoma and Kansas. Check the species distribution maps on ebird. There might be a hot spot closer to you.
