I took these a few years ago at the Lakeside, CA rodeo from the stands. It was my first attempt at capturing a rodeo and quite different from my normal motorsports shoots.

Hi daytonadays.
Well I have managed to get cheap(ish) flights from the 8th - 15th March and have booked seats at the Arcadia rodeo for the 9th. I have the option of a 70 - 200 f2.8 on a ff camera or a100 - 400 f4.5 -5.6. Am i likely to need the extra speed of the shorter zoom at this time of year.

Also the ticket states that the gates open at around 11:30 but the rodeo starts at 2PM is there normally anything going on in the arena before 2PM or do I just need to arrive before the start?
I will be driving down from the Kissimmee area.
What is the accepted behaviour at these events, do I need to stay seated or can I wander around with the camera? Sorry if these seem basic questions but I have never been to a rodeo before.

Fordsabroad

Hi Fordsabroad .. sorry for the delay in answering
Firstly, no need to apologise for asking "basic questions" ... I wondered the same kinda thing before I went and "will I be able to see without standing up" " can I ? etc etc" ...
I did use my seat for awhile, but mostly I was wandering about, ... not getting in anyone's way obviously.. saw quite a few 400/500mm lenses, ppl using monopods ... As for lens choice, hmmm, 100/400 would work for reach across the arena to the chute but the 2.8? can ya beat that for making ya subject "pop" ?? ;-)a Of course then there's the unknowns, how long will the rider stay on? will he get across the arena towards me? etc etc .. don't think you'll need extra speed, there's usually plenty of sunlight. Website says there's a "shootout" at 1pm... if it's like last time it's the "cowboy gun fight" between the goodies and the baddies. :-) (you'll need to be nearer to the chute for that)
I would say I'd join ya but this year the
http://gpstpete.com/ (external link) is the same weekend and that's right on my doorstep :-) :-) so I'll be there. (pop over on the Sunday - good photo op )

you'll also be near https://www.swfwmd.state.fl.us …as/circlebbarreserve.html (external link) - quite the place for wildlife, I'm told. ( the monster 'gator that was on breakfast tv ??)

Hope all this helps and that you have a great time when you're here. :-P
Don't hesitate to ask if ya need any more info.

Daytonadays
Thanks for your reply, most helpful. However a last minute family illness has meant I have to cancel my trip to Florida, I am really dissapointed but needs must. I will get to photograph a Rodeo sometime - just not this month!

Which means I have 2 tickets for the Arcadia rodeo on the 9th March going free if anyone would like them. I would rather they were used than go to waste so if any members can use them please contact me and I will email them over.

Don't even begin to think I'm criticizing your images.
Just a natural curiosity.
