Very nice captures. (Consider leveling your horizon in photo #2.)

I don't know............I think it adds to the sense of action........

Don't even begin to think I'm criticizing your images.
Just a natural curiosity.

Doug, nothing wrong with your interpretation. It's your artistic expression. IMHO, in this particular capture, it makes the rider and the horse appear as if they are headed down hill. I also believe that if you leveled this photo it would actually make it more compelling. (I do understand that if you leveled it properly, you might end up cutting off part of the rider's hat (head) and/or might not allow for enough "space" on the top side.) I DO like the wonderful action! (Just giving you some feedback to ponder.)

just for giggles, i leveled and picked up the exposure for compare. Once and a while I like to adjust the angles of action shot to give a different perspective. the gate in the background throws the eye a bit. what do you think?

It must be nice being at a rodeo with plenty of light and quality horses. I don't live anywhere near such a place, so here is photo by a guy with a camera, living in a one stop light county and doesn't have a clue what he is doing. I know SS is too low, but the light was so variable I used 1/250 sec. and Auto ISO to help get half decent exposures. Most of the barrels or poles required ISO 10,000 and higher. This was by far the best lighting anywhere in the arena.
The mules were slow or really slow. This mule must have been half quarter horse and well trained. It was by far the quickest and that still doesn't compare to horses.
