First time ever shooting "OCF"..waiting for my wireless triggers to arrive in the mail so this shot was created with the flash on top of the camera, shot into an umbrella.

That sounds tough to shoot like that, but i don't think that i could have waited either to start practicing.

Two things to watch for, depending on the mood that you are going for.

#1 You are over 1 stop under exposed. If your flash was set to manual at 1/8 power, bring it up to 1/4 +.03 or more. Manual flash settings keeps your shots consistent, TTL will change flash out put from shot to shot. Keep in mind that the distance of the softbox to the person effectively changes the flash output power as well.
Closer = brighter and closer = faster light fall off (falls off to shadow faster).

#2, Set the umbrella up higher as the catch light is a bit low.

I hope the unsolicited advice is okay.

Thanks for the advice..I agree with the exposure, going to go back when I get home and bump it a bit.

Pushed the exposure a bit. Better?

I more so meant, when getting the initial image, be sure to get your flash/exposure correct.
It will help you keep the black shirt black etc.

IMHO there is not enough contrast or difference in values (lights and darks), so what I see mostly are the midtones ...kind of flat. But what do I know? Nothing :) I just paint.

So?

Just an observation. One catch light, two nose shadows.
