Just came back from a short weekend trip to a noble hotel with my gf. Stayed there only for a night but I tried to get the most out of it. I really like these shots:

i'm tempted to buy a Canon EF 16-35 f/4L IS. anyone experience that lens? color and corner to corner sharpness? CA and flairs control?

It's outstanding Vinz. Only reason I sold mine is because I wanted to go all native lenses (where possible). It was my most used lens till I sold it. Have occasionally thought about getting another one.

Color is especially outstanding with the 16-35mm...richer/more vibrant than the Sony FE 16-35mm in my opinion/experience. Corner sharpness is better than Sony (slightly); outstanding for a zoom.

Sunstars are also an outstanding attribute of the lens.

I've only got platitudes and praise and high recommendations for the lens. The Batis 18mm, 25mm, and Loxia 21mm are all sharper in the corners, but that's just great primes vs a great zoom. As far as zooms go, it's as good as I've seen for wide-angle.

Awesome images Travis. I didn't know you lived in ATL. I knew David was close by. Yeah we definitely need to meet up. Would love to hang out with you guys and shoot. I'll keep you posted so we can firm up a date and time.

I would love to shoot with Travis, and would love to shoot with you...we could have a lot of fun togther. :)

I just don't get to Atlanta nearly enough...if I could get myself going shooting Atlanta the way I was in KC, I might stand make a few bucks in sales there. I keep selling my KC photos (made another sale yesterday), but haven't made one penney shooting in the South except for my KC-based former employer HNTB. I need more time there to start developing some comfort.

i don't expect a faster AF on that since it's not native. does it work though?

it's also intended for landscape and RE photos only so AF is not critical for me. could be use for environmental portrait.

i'm not sure for milkyway stuff though since it's only F4.

Looking forward to shooting together David. It will be fun.

Congrats on the photo sales. That's great!

AF is great on a7R II. Can't say anything about astro...not my thing. :)

There is a richness to the images I got with the Canon EF 16-35mm f/4L IS that really hasn't been matched by any of my FE lenses, including the Batis, in my opinion.

Aside from all the praises I can heap on the lens, it's unlikely I'll buy it again for the simple reason I want my lenses to be as small and light as possible. But if I were doing RE work, where I could use the one lens to get all my shots, it makes total sense.

I got lucky when the water misters turned on further emphasizing the rain forest feel to this capture. By the way, I wish there was a way to change the white background on POTN to dark grey like FM. Images seem to pop more with a darker background.

Batis 18

Edit: I might crop down a bit to get rid of the light up top.

Great shot...those misters remind me that it's aobut 108° right now with thunderclouds building up along with the humidity. Whew, I wonder what there is to drink?

Hah Vinz you and I are going to have the same exact kit eventually...I'm eyeing that lens as a cost effective way to get a high quality UWA focal lengths. I owned the lens back in my a7r days, and sold it to fund the a7rII and really liked it a lot. The colors and micro-contrast 24-70II and 16-35 F4 IS are very reminiscent of the Batis and Loxia lenses IMO. Plus the sunstars are awesome. If AF is anything like the 24-70II, it will play well with the a9. I like using UWA focal lengths during wedding receptions since the distortion creates a drunken tunnel view aesthetic.

David, aside from the size, any other reason you would prefer native over adapted as a landscape guy? (internal reflections, adapter alignment, etc etc)

I brought the 18mm Batis from a mate this week. Weather in Auckland has been really bad and not had a chance to use it yet.

Walking to my shop this morning and managed to grab this one. Hand held and not planned, but came out ok.

Local camera shop had a pretty good deal on a used c-stand, so I snagged one today.

It sounds like a stupid thing to be excited about, but I've been using the Rapid Box XXL for my past couple of shoots and the damn thing keeps falling over. The set-up is pretty light-weight when using the AD600 and extension head, but because of the size of the modifier, a lot of the weight is distributed to the front of the stand and I have to very carefully hang the ad600 base on the side opposing the modifier to balance it....which means if the modifier turns even slightly, it tips over.

No such problem with the c-stand. It is a lot heavier, but if it means no more falls, it'll definitely be worth it. This whole set-up is massive, but I'm really happy with the rapid box xxl ....super soft light that really looks like natural light.

Quick test shot of my son because he just happened to be in the room while I was messing with this stand

Certainly the adapter issues always a concern. I had special problems with internal reflections using TS-E 17 and 24, but don't recall experiencing it with the 16-35mm...the tilt-shifts may have unique troubles on that part.

But, to answer your question, if size/weight weren't a priority for me then my answer would be a strong "no." There is no other reason, aside from size/weight for me to prefer prefer the Sony FE 16-35mm over the Canon one.

AF performance is equal to 24-70L II on a7R II from my memory, although I usually kept it off for land/cityscape shooting.

OK, there is one weird thing with the lens on a7R II (just odd, not negative). If you switch IS off then the SR app thinks you switched it on and tells you to switch it off. Weird. So, you have to leave IS on during SR app uses. It's weird, but fine. Pictures come out amazing regardless.
