Arch, there is a parameter under the focus tab="lens drive when AF impossible". You can turn it on or off. Could be the culprit.

Thanks - it might have been a setting like that. I don't remember what it was at before the reset.

What I would like to see is camera makers allow us to save settings to a card or computer so we can quickly reset when things get buggered up.

That would be a fine feature. Scanning software allows you to save complex settings.

Had some issues with the AF of my 7D2. The AF would not work when I was too far away. It used to focus when the viewfinder was seriously fuzzy before, but it suddenly stopped doing that. I use BBF, and pressing it did nothing when the view was too out-of-focus. If I got the subject somewhat focused by turning the focus ring, then the AF would work normally. But that was inconvenient, and sometimes the moment would have passed.

It wasn't the lens; no focus range was set. Anyway, the behavior was the same with two different lenses.

At first I thought the camera was just having a bad day and all would be fine the next day. But the problem persisted.

Finally I went into the menu and did "Reset all camera settings". That fixed it! AF returned to normal behavior.

So my question is, what setting could have caused this? I want to know for next time so I don't do that setting again, and so I don't have to do a reset if the problem returns.

Archibald,
I don't recall the exact name, but there is a setting that tells the camera to Search for Focus when focus not found like you indicate. It then makes the camera rack the lens looking for focus.

There is also a setting that tells the camera to Not to shoot if focus not found, obviously turn that off

Canon does this, just buy a 1D family camera.
We all want this to be available on the rest of the camera lines.

Most consumer companies that withhold capability via intentionally crippling products, will incur a competitor that wiol take market share by providing the added value (of the cropped feature). Unfortunately,Canon chooses to ride their strengths to the detriment of their customers. They have done this for a while, EC in M mode (until 2014), no spot af linked to active focus point, not including a dot tune-like auto MFA, limiting auto ISO to 400 when flash is On, etc.

Yes, that is in the 4th AF menu. It may well have been set incorrectly. I have "Lens drive when AF impossible" = ON now. I don't know for sure how it was set before.

I must regularly reset my 7DII, it's nothing new. I'm sure canon thought it a good joke to play. Some do not believe until it is their turn. This camera is prone to things setting it off and a reset is the answer. I'm not one to constantly change setting because I know it will bite me in the you know what!! I leave the AF set to case 5 and about never change it. I use spot 99% of the time and centre group on birds in flight. I had big trouble with the back wheel and now the top wheel jumps to what ever it chooses, forward back ward not at all. It chooses and I live with it. Cant even bring myself to think about sending it in. Not really sure what to do about it but take 4 times longer to adjust on the fly. There is no setting maladjustment that will put the 7DII into a tail spin except making a change the shouldn't affect the outcome one gets. If you spend enough time with this camera you get to see the side of it I don't like..

I guess with a bit less than 10k on the shutter my camera is pretty 'new' compared to a lot of the others contributing to this thread. As such I haven't had any mechanical issues (knock on wood) so far. Despite my camera's lack of focus performance in general which I will admit is more than likely my lack of skill than problems with the camera. The couple of times it really be needed to perform it did. ( daughter's grad and niece's track and field meet). So maybe there is hope for my copy of this body and me in particular.

Rod
