At the very least

I want to die peacefully, in my sleep, like my grandfather.
Not screaming, terrified, like his passengers.

Looks like it might be on the tail end of the train, perhaps being dragged deadhead on the way to the Maintenance Depot. I don't see a crew in there. In the USA, operating that engine would be illegal.

It was the only engine. And it had cars it was pulling

Ditch lights are on which means it is in lead. Looks like there is crew inside. Most likely was being used as a local or switcher. Could be bad part of town and window was broken out by vandals. Sometimes the freight just has to move, extra AC via broken window won't hurt. :)

It was 105 this past weekend, so I stayed home and went through some older RAW's I hadn't processed yet. Thinking of cooler times! I shot this across through my passenger window from the drivers side so I (or my camera) wouldn't get soaked.

I wasn't there so can't say but it looks like there are windows (really clean). I would think the wipers would bow into the cab if they weren't on the glass. That jagged look in the left front window appears to be a corner of a page on the dash inside the cab.

Here are a couple from last week north of the local BNSF yard. Second pic you can see the local switchers doing some switching in the small yard. Train in first pic is a SB intermodal and so is the train in second pic (North bound).
