Looks like it's going to be a bit of a blow to the hopes of the 6D2.

For some however, it still may be a step up, as John is saying the noise at high ISO's looks like it is going to be improved over even the 5D4. That's pretty impressive.

If I were still shooting performances, I'd want that over the low ISO DR.

Who knows? Its still premature. So much speculation. We now have fifty-eight pages of sometimes very strong opinions on a camera that no one here has actually used or even seen yet.

Every release is this way. The 5d4 one was longer I believe.

Yeah it's still early to pass judgement, although if this proves true (that the Mark II's low-ISO is worse than the Mark I's) that could be a bit disappointing and make an upgrade a hard decision.

I canceled my preorder. I could deal with all the gimped features but was expecting an improved sensor. Going to hang back and see how this plays out, but I am currently researching sony. Going to put my 6d2 money into a long overdue computer upgrade and re-evaluate where to go after that is done.

I've been waiting to upgrade my MkII and it was going to be either the 6DII or the Sony A7II. Gonna wait until I see some real data and not rely on all this prelim stuff.

If you follow that link in the notes, the 6D2 isn't listed (DxOMark Derived Photographic Dynamic Range versus ISO Setting (external link)). It's not on DxO's site....so not sure where the data is coming from. Even if it were a valid data set, the 6D2's high ISO is not better then the 5D4 in those comparison charts.

On the FM thread, the guy who made that chart claims it's from a raw file given to him from DPR.

If this is true, I still won't cancel my preorder. I'm more than happy with the upgrades it has over the 6D. IF it could match my M5 at base iso DR I would be happy, but it's not the end of the world if it doesn't.

If DR weakness is true, and one does not need DPAF for video, 5DIII is a better value.

If DR BS is true, I'm buying a used 5DIV at some point in the next six months or so and will start considering other platforms. Not that I really feel the need for more DR, but if/when crop sensors out perform FF something is seriously wrong.

That's the part that seriously makes no sense to me. I don't get how a new sensor with on chip ADC design can not show improvement in either area. I will reserve my full judgement till we have 100% confirmed retail copies tested.

Has anyone spoken to a Canon rep about dynamic range performance of the new 6D2?

Would be helpful to get an official perspective.

There was someone on another forum that claimed to have spoken to a rep at one of the testing events and the rep claimed it would be very close to the 5D4 in terms of DR. Problem is anyone here could claim they have spoken to a rep and unless it's an official interview, it can't be verified.

Sadly we all have to wait until we get a full review published.

I'm really surprised Canon wouldn't have some official press release addressing the issue, particularly in light of the considerable negativity about it on this and other forums.

I think because at the end of the day, our concerns don't really matter. We are a very small percentage of people who buy the cameras and a lot for people don't even look into matters like DR when buying a new body.

Canon also never discuss DR and probably can't mention it at all. If they had never mentioned DR in the past, then all of a sudden bragged about it when the 5D4 came out they would look stupid. But by never acknowledging it they never have to worry about that issue.

I can say for me that dynamic range doesn't have any impact on if I buy or don't buy this camera. I set my exposure for the subject and don't care if the clouds are blown in the background or the dark corner into nowhere can be pushed five stops.

So I know there are plenty of people who this would impact greatly, I am glad I am not one of them.

I'm also one of the people that isn't bothered if there proves to be no improvement in DR. I preordered mine a few hours after announcement and still have 0 regrets.
