This is an older image shot with a Lee Big Stopper. I think the Big Stopper has its uses but I'm not sure this kind of image is it. The really long exposure time (173 sec) combined with the relatively dark scene generated a huge amount of noise, as well as removing all the texture from the water. I didn't have one at the time, but a 4 stop or even the Little Stopper would have done the image better justice in my opinion. As it is this took an extensive amount of post processing in Ps, along with using a noise plugin (Dfine2) to get a reasonable image. It was just too far out for what I could accomplish in Lr, which is by far my preferred method.

Personally, I stopped using any ND(graduated) filters larger than 0.9 for sunsets. As you say the noise is too much(for me) if I use anything stronger. I use them in high contrast situations or if I want to create motion and of course to smooth out water as well as clouds.


Don't even begin to think I'm criticizing your images.
Just a natural curiosity.

Yeah I'm right there with you. I use my .90 some, but realistically don't use that one too often unless the sun is actually showing some. I use a .90 soft GND quite a bit, in fact it is the only GND I use any more. For me the hard edge filters just create too much difference between sky and water. I use the soft over the scene and put the transition near the shore to get the foreground some more exposure.

I do like the Little and Big Stopper, but for me they are more mid-day filters to show either cloud movement or smooth the water out some.
