My 70D and 80D both report zero recharge efficiency. When I look at the battery status in the camera's battery menu, it shows one red box. But after I recharged the battery shot over 30 minutes of video, the battery menu still showed 67% capacity remaining.

Does the red box really mean that the battery is about dead? Even if the battery seems to be working I don't think I would trust it as my only battery for a field trip.

The battery is an several-years-old LPE6 which I recharged in the Canon charger.

My Canon LP-E6 is over 8 years old and has been showing one bar for half that time. I checked the camera this morning; the battery shows 80% with 100 exposures and that includes live-view and lots of chimping. Considering your battery's performance so far, unless your battery has a catastrophic failure (short, physical damage, charger failure), it's probably good for awhile.
