A closer look says you're right. The Before plate has more embedded carboniferous residue next to the rim. However, I wouldn't insist on such a literal interpretation. Using two burgers is just part of the staging.

Working with a food stylist here, she hands me the plate and then I get my lighting right, whilst I am shooting, she gets the after plate prepared. Once on set we adjust things together along with the creative director.
I never said it was the exact same plate, its just a before and after pic. We did a whole set which unfortunately never made it to print.

That's too bad.

I get it. It was a terse comment, meant to poke fun. Seems like the stylists' fault in this case. I think the magic of staging is brought out when it is believable. If this was truly intended as a before and after, for me it misses the point. If it's about a full and empty plate, then sure.

Well, the title says "Before and after," so that's evidently what the OP intended. The picture represents before and after. If you apply a journalistic standard and insist on literal truth–did the photographer actually capture two phases in the life of one burger–it fails. But you don't have to do so.

Funny debate really, i dont see how if you move the plate its no longer an after picture.

Here is the premise for the shoot. The pic of the food was going to be on the left page and then on the right page would be an empty plate with the text and info about the restaurant in the middle of the plate. I believe our job was done as directed. I dont see how you could demonstrate before and after any other way. I dont think the stylist did anything wrong.

It's not a debate, but OhLook is making it more than it is. Regardless of how literal one is meant to interpret this representation, the story here would be more powerful if only one plate was used for this shoot.

Anyway, not saying anything about "moving" the plate. My only point is that there are two different plates here. It's not a before and after of the same plate.

Maybe you both missed the point.

For consistency sake, in this case, between the previous photo and the new photo... there's no seam between the two photos of the 2nd photo (unless it's really well blended). Instead of a before and after shot, it's more a full plate and empty plate shot.

Edit: I'm thinking that it is a good transition between two shots and perhaps some blending. The squares of the checker pattern match up too well. The shadowy blotch in the center square below both plates match exactly, as do the curvature of corresponding squares around the plates. I can think of a few reasons/methods the checker patterns match so perfectly. I see a possible seam in the upper center of the whole photo. Kinda trippy the more I look at it. So anyway... if I were the client, I'd like a better seamless transition in the first photo to match the seamlessness of the second.

Yes, I'm a stickler for details. I am impressed by the exactness of the placement of the plates across the blue checkers.
