Does anyone know if there's a way to make the Sony's "act" like a DSLR in terms of EVF / Live view?

I want to shoot through the EVF but use the rear LCD for menus etc. From what I can see its either all in the EVF with the rear LCD off or both are on. I think if the rear LCD was not on all the time it would help battery life a bunch. Especially on the A7 series bodies

The EVF drains the battery faster than the LCD so I would turn that off if you reach critical battery levels

The EVF and rear LCD are actually never on at the same time. There's a proximity sensor in the eye cup that will toggle between the two when it detects that something is up against the viewfinder, but they're never on simultaneously.

If you're not wanting the live-view in the rear LCD, you can toggle the rear LCD to show a menu. By default, this is mapped to the "up" control wheel button when in shooting mode. It's marked "DISP" on the body. This will probably help battery life in theory since its not processing the live-view image in the rear LCD.

Thanks Eddie. I still want a Contax 100-300 among many other things like a tilt-shift lens, 35mm lens, Synology NAS, FLM ballhead, RRS pano kit, Canon Pixma Pro 10 printer, etc.

Synology is the best. I used to have the 1815+, sold it thinking that I wouldn't need all that space, now I'm sitting at like 6TB of files and could use the extra space. I was looking at QNAP's as well, they look super sweet, especially the one that has 6 regular HD slots, 2 SSD, and 2 M.2 slots. But it's like $1,800 just for the NAS not including the drives!

Yeah, I know. I dont think I worded my question the right way, HAHA!. I was hoping there was a setting so the EVF would work when you put your eye to it while the rear LCD would always stay off, unless you hit the playback or menu buttons. Basically mimicking the function of a DSLR. It doesn't seem to be that way. If the rear LCD is off then everything has to be viewed through the EVF.

I've been thinking more and more about the 16-35 GM and frankly the 24-70 GM. I am a bit surprised that I'm not super excited by either and that includes the FE 12-24 too. I think I've come to realization that I truly prefer high quality primes over zooms. I'm quite happy with my Laowa 12mm, Batis 18mm, Loxia 21mm combo on the wide end and FE 55 and Loxia 85 on the mid range long end. I guess if I was traveling all the time, I may prefer the 16-35 and a 24-70 to avoid changing out lenses all the time. Anyone else share the same about primes vs zooms?

This is the way mine is setup I.e nothing on LCD and evf only activates when the eye sensor detects something

Edit - just checked and realised it's not. I have the trash can button assigned to switch off LCD so that only evf is active. If I push playback LCD comes on again

Edit 2 - also, not sure how new you are to mirrorless but you need to get into the habit of switching the power off between shots. The boot back up time is minimal and you drastically extend battery life

Yep , CV15+lox21 over the 12-24 or 16-35 all day long for me. Sure I don't cover every focal length but I can make it work and only take out one lens if I choose. With the zoom the size is the size

Alfredo, respecting your position for ultimate IQ, I'm on the other side---too frequently chaning
focal lengths and suffering the consequent dust on the sensor which I hate (don't we all). So I
tend more toward zooms. Yeah, all that, plus I'm lazy.

I map the LCD/EVF to the C1 button on all my Sonys that will allow.
99% of the time I use the evf and rarely do I use the LCD....I'm sure there is a
downside to this approach (battery) but to me it is distracting when suddenly the LCD
comes on or off.

I had a few friendly bucks come over near my house this evening. A small group stopped by a few days ago with wonderful golden light but I didn't have my 70-200 lens on my a7RII at the time. A few of the bucks stopped by tonight and I was ready but the light was not as great.

Heavy crop on this one. Really wish I had a 100-400.

This one posed for me. I think I may prefer the color version which I'll share in a bit.

Still playing with my Laowa wide angle macro lens. I wanted to see if I could get the Royal Flush all in focus when shot at a shallow angle by stacking shots. Then I thought I'd also use the green felt cover for my dining room table as the background. Because of the shallow angle, more of the table was in the frame than I thought would be so I went ahead and 'filled in' the rest of the scene with chips, more cards, drinks and even an ashtray. Too much of the rest of the room was also in the frame so I placed a flash mounted in a 7" reflector on a boom over the center of the table to confine the area lit to just the table. And of course, when I put my sig on the top card, I began to think that shouldn't it be on all the cards?

Brother, I can sure create a lot of work for myself!

Finally getting around to the a6500.
This one with 1.4TC and FEGM100400.
Also playing with the Godox TT350s and had it off camera several feet for this shot.
The big V860IIs is a porker, me thinking the smaller flash will get more use/packed more time.
