That is just topnotch, Ed! What AF setting did you use? Single point, or one of the 5 or 9 point assist settings? When I take this kind of shot, my keeper rate drops considerably as the camera sometimes focuses on the water in the foreground.

Single point. And yes I had a lot of misses. More than I would like to admit. For the same reason. With a long lens it's tough to get that point on the bird while it is flying fast like that. Learning curve. Mine was slow, let me tell you. Also I was using a loaner Canon 300mm 2.8 iiL plus 2.0 TC and had the lens settings wrong for a while until I got them set right. So my keeper rate was even lower at first. Never used that lens before.

Then the birds all took off suddenly and it was over. Just as I was getting warmed up to the technique. Now will have to wait until next year as they are getting ready to migrate to SA any time now.

Are you using a gimble mount for the lens? Your tracking looks superb.

I moved the light over to the flower bed with the intent to do some macro work when this guy came to investigate. True to my screen name, I pointed the camera at him, locked focus, he flew under the beauty dish, I pushed the button and there it is. It was a little overexposed but useable. Another "Lucky Shot"!
