A pair of Cooper's Hawks nested somewhere nearby and now that the young are flying they've been spending a lot of time in the trees next door. Yesterday my wife saw one make a pass at our Jack Russell. This morning one of the juveniles came after a small Cottontail and flew within 10 feet of me, then landed on my fences and posed for a few minutes.

The juveniles have been making a lot of noise and the dog's been barking at them. He's about 17 lbs so I doubt they view him as lunch.

Thanks. The adults are around all year, and I've even seen them perched by our feeders, but they keep their distance when I'm outside. I think the youngsters are more curious than wary right now.

Don't be surprised if you start finding piles of song bird feathers by your feeder. I have a cooper stop by now and then and helps himself to my yard birds.

We've found feathers before, and several times we've seen them in the peach tree with our feeders about 15 feet outside the kitchen window. That's a Niger sock in the second shot. I'd guess that almost anyone that has feeders has accipiters visiting regularly.
