I do believe that sony a6300/500 is a bit better, but in my opinion its a negligible difference ..I can email you the raws if you want

this picture below is a pretty extreme example .. +5 exposure and 100% on the shadows..

I wouldn't call it usable but the info is there.. when I took the picture I was trying to make the darks as dark as possible..

below are more typical situations , first one is underexposed (thought I had it on auto iso , that's how I normally do street candids)and bad under the arm firing technique:oops:;-)a

+2.5 exp and 100% shadow..i personally wouldn't bump the shadow that much ,but this is more for show..

and this one is your typical over head sun shot with blown highlights one area and dark shadows in the other

Thanks for the examples. Looks like there's plenty of flexibility with those files. Thanks!

They look good. Def have an organic look to them. So...How much can you push the shadows with Fuji. I'm blown away with how far I can take the Sony files.

Not sure, since I switched to Fuji I don't shot raw anymore. I only shot jpeg and tweek my jpeg settings in camera :)

portrait session tomorrow with the xt2 ..

so far from what i'm seeing on the xt2... seems like I need to over expose by a stop or 2/3 of a stop , well according to cameras meter.. when its zero'd histogram shows like an under exposed photo.. and when I bring in to process It certainly looks under exposed

is this anyone elses experience?

and a totally unrelated photo..:-)

This was my experience with canon. I got used to shooting + 2/3 stop EC to get a good raw file to start with. I asked the same question and someone told me it was a default of canon to help people that might not be looking at the histogram not blow out highlights. I.e. People can always push shadows but might not be able to recover HL's. I eventually found the sweet spot and stopped being concerned that I was having to dial in EC.

Sony experience has been a little different. No question that I have to be a bit more careful with preserving the highlights. It's better to expose for HL's and push shadows.....totally different than with canon. Sounds like Fuji is more similar to canon....as long as you can actually recover HL's if necessary.

Is your dynamic range set to Auto? Is you EVF brightness also on Auto?

I've noticed the same thing with my X-Pro2, never been an issue with my previous Fuji's, I think it's how the newer cameras meter on matrix metering. Turning off auto DR and Auto EVF brightness helps, but for portraits I would just shoot with the spot meter.
