The 70-200 IS version has better colour contrast and seems sharper from my experience, The IS version is an awesome lens, I can shoot handheld in much lower light with mine, Ive had it 10 years and its been flawless

In my experience with the older, non STM 55-250 and the 70-200 f4 IS, there is a huge difference in color rendition and sharpness. I find the IS to be particularly helpful at longer focal lengths and I think this is reason the 70-200 f4 IS has retained its value. Good luck making your decision!

I would recommend you go for the IS version. The $$ is minimal when you consider you will have it for quite sometime.

Check Canon's refurbished website. Sometimes you get units for just a bit more than used ones, with full warranty.

Comparing this to any other mid range zoom isn't even fair. This is perhaps Canon's sharpest Tele zoom, the colour and contrast is simply superb. It leaves me in awe sometimes.

Get it soon as you can. The IS version is showing its age when it comes to noisy IS but the optics are simply superb and for the price its quite a bargain.

I have both the 55-250 stm and 70-200 f4 IS.
Having a full frame body and a crop sensor body its handy to have options.
However when comparing files from both lenses on my crop body its hard to tell any difference between the two.

Love the IS on this thing. Looking thru the viewfinder, it's like something locked it in a vice once you press the shutter half way down to activate it. Priceless.

That's day and night as far as I am concerned. Not a knock on 55-250 but the 70-200 F4L IS is just so much better.

Another vote for the 70-200 f/4L IS! Tack sharp and very nice color. Relatively light and not overly obnoxious size. Its all but married to my 80D. Matter of fact i plan to shoot a powerboat race sunday with it!

I took this shot for the beautiful winter light, the pelican was a bonus, this lens is great on my full frame and crop cameras

I know usually the negative space is suppose to be in front of an object. Especially moving objects. Maybe boats are different so as to show the wake? I don't know.
