I almost stepped on this guy on our deck. It was only about an inch long, so the eyes are very small. The DOF of the shot is barely deep enough for the eyes. It did take several attempts (even with spot focusing) to get the focus on the eye. I was hand holding at minimum focusing distance. This is a heavy crop; about 25% of the full photo.

If I don't get the shots I want with the gear I have, the only optics I need to examine is the mirror on the bathroom wall. The root cause will be there.

We're having a lot of smoke in the Pacific Northwest from the wildfires burning in British Columbia. It's making the sunrises and sunsets look weird. This was sunrise this morning.

When reviewing the images I noticed what looked like the blinking of its eyes.
I only learned today that is is called a "nictitating membrane" over its eyes.

All images are significant crops.

This lens is a lot of fun to use.

Out at Yellowstone with the 7DII at 640mm... cropped pretty tight but it would still make a nice 12x18...

I had a lot of fun photographing the total solar eclipse of August 21, 2017. I'd never been to a total eclipse before, and I never tried to photograph one. I wanted to get this one! I did a lot of research, came up with my plan, and practiced it frequently. For me, it paid off. Here are my results.

Just before first contact:

IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_00.jpg

50% partial eclipse:

IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_01.jpg

The last crescent I took before the Diamond Ring:

IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_02.jpg

The Diamond Ring (about 30 seconds after the previous shot):

IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_03.jpg

Baily's Beads (8 seconds after the diamond ring). The sun is shining through the valleys between mountains.

IMAGE: http://www.lj3.com/1dx2/TSE_04.jpg

Start of totality (just 3 seconds after Baily's Beads):

Image editing ok; C&C always welcome.

This is the corona at totality. It's a blend of two photos. Note the little white dot near the lower left corner of the image. It's the star Regulus (thanks to Mark Urwiller for the correction).
