That's my girl! Sort of. She belongs to the Commemorative Air Force and is assigned to the Capital Wing. I'm a flight engineer/crew chief for her. I spent 90% of that weekend up on her wing giving tours, but did manage to do a little photography. If you went over the wing, chances are good that it was me you talked to.

John

I didn't get a chance to talk to you that day. There were a lot of people around when I stopped by. I believe my wife talked to you though. She spent some time there.

Just a question...

Any reason why you are shooting these at 1/500th of a second, instead of, say, 1/100th or even 1/60th to get some prop blur?

I only ask as these were the kinds of speeds I used to shoot circuit racing and drift cars...

If that was meant for me, I have several reasons-
-I do mix up the exposures so I do get some sharp ones. I do want a couple of sharp images
-Right across from me, there isn't going to be much blur if I'm in the plane of the propeller arc, though the tips are somewhat blurred
-This was a small airport, so this flyby was quite close to me, so I'm panning fairly fast; I threw away may shots for blur.
-It was a very bright day, near noon. I'm already at ISO 100 and I have no filter to slow it down a bit.

I still seem to get a little prop blur even at 1/500

Yeah, I was just wondering...

Part of the reason the magazines liked my drift pictures was, at the time, drift was pretty new and most people's images were somewhat static, while mine were shot slow with plenty of blur in the background which looked more 'dynamic'...

Nothing like an open cockpit on a warm summer afternoon. Everyone has goggles, except the pilot.

Best jet demo in the business, in my opinion.

. . .But It's Time To Buzz the Tower

Andrew McKenna performs a low fly by, only appearing to buzz the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton tower following the Heritage Flight with the F-22 Raptor. Photographed during the Northeastern Pennsylvania Airshow's Friday practice show.

Radial engines don't actually leak oil, by the way. They just mark their territory!
