we had fun chasing the eclipse yesterday...the A7R2 was doing a timelapse over the Morton Overlook valley, and I had the 7D with a 28-300L on 300 shooting the eclipse...I had a lot of fun, the 7 hour ride home was worth it...even if that is twice as long as it should take...

And the a9 arrives today...can't wait...too bad where I am going for work tomorrow looks to be rained out for the two days I am there...

Charlie, what about glueing on some small bump stops right before the filter touches the front element?

no need, I simply wrapped gaffers around the filter thread, bumpers would be too thick. Currently, my filter solution is too thick since they are stacked, I didnt have time to experiment now that my wife is home 24/7 :-P

even with 16mm, I'm not too concerned about having more, as I have to get extremely close to water wider. Generally for cloud movement, I'm ok with smooth reflections without filter from 24mm and below.

For my creamer shot, I wanted a more diffuse, gradient light. In the photo below, you can compare the light striking the left of the creamer, which is straight from the strip box to the light on the right where I used a diffuser at right angles to the creamer and the strip box at a 45° angle to the diffuser. The pullback shows the diffuser in relation to the creamer and the strip box.

The diffuser is made from a window screen frame and some doubled tracing paper held in place with plastic clothes pins. Since I've only made one of these diffusers so far, I took two photos with it, one with it on the left and one on the right and then merged in PS. Now that I know this will work, I'll make a second diffuser and attach the paper to it using double sided tape. Eventually, I'll get some Savage translum translucent plastic to replace the tracing paper.

I hope that made sense.

But the important box inside was fine...and this is why I double box items when I ship something like a lens or camera...same thing happened to the 5D2 when it went to CA...outside box took a big hit, inside box took a small hit, no damage to the gear.

I had something similar happen to the outside shipping box some time ago. I didn't think anything could have survived when I first saw the box but inside, everything was OK. Glad your a9 was still in good shape when you opened yours.

good thing it's not optics, as alignment can go out of wack.

my sigma 135, a beat of a lens, came in a terribly mangled box, and has the slightest decentering..... coincidence? It's ultra small, so I'm not too concerned, but other lenses come in great shape like the 12-24 and just about perfect.......

From the outside, the camera box is perfect.

There was a large air space in that corner, no bubble wrap in that spot, it was all around the a9 box...so I think all is good.

I had someone send me a lens, shoved in an overnight mailer...no padding, no packing, just shoved in there and sealed up...nothing but mm thin cardboard to protect it...lens worked fine! I was shocked.

lol, I dont recall how many broken lenses I've had, but probably 4-5 these past two years. Abnormally high, considering the first 10 years I might have had 2 broken lenses. It's like the post office guy kicks my packages or something, he definitely throws the packages when I'm not home!

I just sent a really mint 24-70L MkI to the Missouri area...after the 5D2 got dropped and spared, I paid the extra $10 to have the Special Handling on the 24-70L...it arrived unscathed...that along with the insurance made me more comfortable as the shipper that I did everything in my power to make sure it arrived safely...along with 2 pounds of bubble wrap, double boxing and really securing it...it arrived to the new owner in great shape.

I tend to follow insurance guidelines of 2" spacing between the object in all directions. I will double box at discretion like the cases where the outer box is in rough shape. I generally keep my package under the 12" size to keep costs down for USPS.

only a few more items and I can afford the 24-70 gm, however, I'm not really enthusiastic about it, and may just keep my money in paypal for the A9/A7iii or whatever. I do love having this beater A7ii camera around so I can rack up the shutter and deal with smaller files. Would love an a9 over a7ii, however that's pretty darn hard to justify, so I may just keep funds around till I really need to spend it.
