People who don't give it a fair shake are missing out on a wicked sharp and versatile lens at a good price for L glass. These are all handheld too...

I agree on the 70-300 L. I sold mine to a friend and I miss it like crazy!

I haven't posted in a long time, here's a blue heron at sunset taken from my 19' Grumman Freighter square stern canoe.

Megan,
Awesome shots.
I love the ones people have posted of the actual sun flares (the orange flare in your second shot).
Not sure what physically causes the white smokey looking emissions in he other three.

Question- for this last shot, what made you think to stop down 4 1/2 stops compared to the other?

It is too bad they don't update he 28-300L or even make a 15-300L super Tele and provide the modern sharpness Canon L known for and demonstrated. I realize they won't be as sharp as prime, but they are doing top sharpness with 4x zooms, you would think that they can get nearly there with another double (2.5x) of the current 4x. Tamron and Sigma do it, common Canon, show them how it's done.

I had very good luck with my 70-300L. I still have it. I can't get motivated to sell it even though I have the very fine 100-400ii and the 70-200 f/2.8 IS

Ha, dumb luck. I was auto bracketing every shot at +- 1 just because this was my first time ever shooting the sun, let alone an eclipse, and I just decided to flip the shutter between fast and slow and then bracket on top of that to see what I got. And yeah I've gotten a lot of "oh wow" comments on that last shot because it cuts out so much of the corona and lets the prominences show beautifully. Also managed to get an eclipse selfie with my son and we also spent the last 45 seconds or so just enjoying it.

That last last shot in the first post is a big no-no, the sun was really coming through when I took it, got flashed a bit, don't try to get one like that if you ever have the chance.

I know Kim, I have resigned to the fact its staying right here, it not waisted money if we use it once a year... and I do so I have zero need to send it down the road for a few bucks. on less than perfect light days it does great.. fast and sharp.. what more could we ask for.. in the field its as sharp as any prime shooting paper if you know what I mean .. lol and its not like we work in controlled conditions. lol

Single frame solar Eclipse over Hemingford, NE.

I believe I have Regulus in the second picture too?

The 7DII was paired with a old Tamron 500mm 55BB.
