It is an honest straight forward approach which I really find far more interesting than the glammed up over made up, over art worked and so called flaws covered up lies we mostly see. Kind of reminds me of the straight forward honest approach that Avedon took with his In the America West portraits.

This picture reminds me of Kathe Kollwitz in fine art: stark lighting to convey more expressionism. There's definitely defiant attitude in the facial expression, and the harsh shadows accentuate that. The forehead is bordering on the edge of blown highlights, but seems well controlled for the intent. Canon 5D mk IV
