That EF 85mm 1.8 is about 20 years old and still set's standards by which others must be measured!

When it comes to AF speed/accuracy yes. That thing never missed and if you blinked you missed the focus. The 200L is pretty fast but not 85 1.8 fast.

I have to say I'm feeling a bit disappointed.
I own the 1.2 L 2 and love it to bits.
I was hoping for a 1.2 with IS.

I guess I'll be hanging on to my archaic, slow as treacle, random focusing, glass canon ball for a while longer.

You could always get both..

Off topic.
Do you use your 5d4 or 1dx2 the most?

Seasonal; winter the 1D gets most of the work (football and the annotation feature), summer the 5D gets more work as I don't typically need those features.

I could see that being seasonal. Kinda like owning a 400 2.8. Only comes out for recitals/sports/track days.

Or just showing off that you can take highly detailed shots of birds with amazing bokeh.

I for one am glad the new 85mm is not f1.2

I am not in the position to buy a new lens so It is easy not buy this new one since it is only f1.4 and not f1.2

If I was a musician, I would simply say my 85 f1.2 goes to 11, not 10 like the new one. "11 is one better isn't it?"

Hilarious, thanks for sharing!

In fairness, it's not rare to shoot sports - our own WaterRockets shoots (high-school?) swimming with a 1D because of the tracking for while swimmers are underwater in the breaststroke and butterfly, as well as getting doused on each flip turn. I've mentioned shooting my wife's triathlons more than a few times. Lots of parents have kids playing soccer or football or such.

Of course, I'm doing that with a 5D3, and plenty are using 7Ds or other crop cameras.

NoBody is going to be able to tell the difference in Bokeh Between F/1.2 and F/1.4

This lens is all going to come down to AF speed, build, color and contrast....If it has the look its gonna sell big time

Im a die hard Canon shooter but will I never give up this Sigma 85 Art. Its the best copy of an 85 that I have had in 10 yrs so very happy. Im sure his canon is going to be great.

Perhaps when the Canon is available you should test it. If the colour and contrast is the same as a 100LIS for example that lens will be very satisfying for pixel peepers and should be NO concern to people that actually print digital files.

Today I used my big pig 85Lmk2 and was extremely happy with the results. However the new Canon 85L f/1.4IS will be 2.09lbs (950 grams) vs the Sigma 85mm ART 2.49lbs (1131grams). Some weight loss with little difference in IQ I'd imagine the Canon will be the winner.

At the end of the day it doesn't matter what you use as it's your tools and not mine.

Laugh but some days I like my fuji X-t2 with 56 f/1.2 over my 5dmk3 or 5dmk4 with 85Lmk2. On print they all look killer!!

the sigma 35 art was at the top of the heap for awhile until canon released 35L II. i'll go out on a limb and say history will repeat itself. when you're spending this much money forward compatibility is an issue since you'll most likely upgrade bodies a couple of times before you upgrade the lens.

The 85L IS is priced closer to the 85L f/1.2 when Canon day it's meant to be in the middle. I wonder if they plan to release a f/1.2L III thay will be significantly more expensive which would make the 85L IS truly the middle priced one....

I'm betting Canon doesn't produce the F1.2 glass anymore and moves to F1.4 with IS. Same for the 50L when they finally release a new 50mm that isn't ancient and isn't made of plastic.

Very best,
